Learning, Life and entrepreneurial skills “Helping children reach their full potential”

(pictures and gestures) Associations (pictures and gestures) One makes associations if you associate a key word with something else or link it to something else. We have already done it when we associated Leonardo with Leonardo di Caprio. Here one does it more directly.

Let’s use “KFC” as an example: If you VISUALISE the word, you see fried chicken or the red and white colour logo. If you see the word “Kentucky”, you think of nothing else but chicken!

Associations can take place in one of FOUR ways: By drawing pictures to associate the word with: e.g. “Love” – draw By using gestures: e.g. Excited – show how excited you are. To associate key words with well known places: e.g. “Spur” see a Write the word in syllables, create a new word (concept) and draw it: e.g. “Stability” – Sta / bi/ li/ ty – Stay Billy T!

Door handle Sweetie Table cloth Washing Clock Dance Cellphone Do something different with your body language or gestures for each of the key words and memorise the words in this manner. Door handle Sweetie Table cloth Washing Clock Dance Cellphone Hairbrush

art of improving your memory MNEMO HANGER-TECHNIQUE (“MNEMONICS”) The Greek god of memory was Mnemosyne. This word refers to the art of improving your memory

It is VERY important to ensure you understand the work before trying to memorise it. 1. Always work from a fixed point, clockwise (in sequence) in the room. 2. Only use fixed items or items that are always on the same place. Do not use the same object twice, e.g. can’t use 2 windows that are the same. START HERE 2 3 1 4 5 1. Door 2. Desk 3. Fish 4. Bed 5. Bedside table

Do the exercise in this room: Connect the item to various objects in your room or any other area in the house. Move clockwise and try to memorise the items. Exercise 1 Piano Concert Ornaments Bear Snow Haircut Mouse Dog Painting

My OWN “MNEMO” Hangers VISUALISE DRAW IMAGES You can also use your body or anything else with which you are familiar. Now we will use your body and memorise a shopping list (bread, milk, sugar, coffee and eggs) VISUALISE AND DRAW IMAGES

Head Bread Stomach Milk Hips Sugar Legs Coffee Feet Eggs HANGER KEY WORD DRAWING   Head Bread You balancing bread on your head  Stomach Milk  Running over your head on to your stomach. Hips Sugar  Carrying a bag of Sugar on your hips Legs Coffee  Coffee coming out of your legs Feet Eggs  Your feet smashing the eggs

How can I develop my senses ? HINTS   How can I develop my senses ? PRACTICE IN USING IT! All your SENSES contribute to being able to study more effectively. Let us look at some exercises for your senses.

EYES EARS AVOID Smoke, bad light, sharp sunlight and exhaustion. REMEMBER It is one of your most valuable organs – PROTECT THEM. PRACTICE See colours, forms and textures around you; Evaluate differences and similarities between the things you see; READ!; See things quicker; Practice moving your eyes quicker; Practice and develop a wider eye span. Visit an optometrist if you suspect any defects.   EARS Continuous loud music – it can damage your hearing. Avoid listening to negative things (language, swearing, gossip, etc.) Words from songs are established in your brain – are these words are either positive or negative? If you listen to junk, junk will come from your mouth. Listen to music that stimulates your brain (classical music) Listen to positive things.

NOSE “TOUCH / FEEL” AVOID REMEMBER PRACTICE Fiddling with your nose. Other people can smell you, thus keep yourself clean and neat. PRACTICE Smell things around you, your room, dog, nature, food, try to associate study with a smell; try to differentiate between different smells; link smells to things around you or that happen to you.    “TOUCH / FEEL” Items and objects that will damage your skin. Your skin is the largest organ of your body. Touch people, things; imagine the “feel” of the things you have to study.

USE YOUR IMAGINATION TASTE sweet, sour, bitter, salty AVOID Dirty objects REMEMBER Even your taste buds send messages to your brain. PRACTICE Differentiate between different various tastes sweet, sour, bitter, salty delicious; compare different tastes with each other; try to taste something without eating it.
