EPQ Things you need to know

what is EPQ all about? An opportunity to do a project in a subject area in which you are interested A context for developing research, critical thinking and project management skills A level 3 qualification which carries AS points but is assessed at A Level standard so has an A* as its highest grade (70 UCAS points).

What does an epq look like? 5,000 Long Written Report Or An Artefact with accompanying 1,000 word essay

How will the project be assessed? The project will be given a mark out of 50 It will be assessed using four assessment objectives: Managing the project (10): identify the topic and its aims and objectives, produce a plan, complete the plan applying organisational skills to meet the planned objectives Using resources (10): obtain and select information from a range of sources, analyse data, apply information relevantly, link resources Developing and realising the project (20): problem solving, decision making, creative thinking, achieve planned outcomes Reviewing the project (10): evaluate learning and performance, communicate effectively, convey outcomes in presentation

Communication Email Face2Face Regular meetings Be prepared!

The Production Log This is where a lot of the marks come from so take it seriously! Needs to be kept electronically and on paper Emailed back and forth to me, (your project supervisor) until each section is ready to be printed and kept in your folder. At the right time you will print off and sign copies to be placed in your folder.

Example titles Design and make a dress inspired by the development of women’s freedom from society’s restraints To what extent has the economic development of Mauritius aided the government in meeting its economic objectives? Is the banning of plastic bags in Lyme Regis making Lyme Bay a greener place? Concrete or asphalt for motorway surfaces?

How has English affected the German language How has English affected the German language? Is this leading to the decline of German as a world language? The Sun and its effects on our solar system. To what extent has Tony Blair revolutionised the Labour Party. The influence of the Post Impressionists on Virginia Woolf’s literature. Economic cost-benefit analysis of the 2012 Olympics. Why has MRSA proved so difficult to combat? Space: Created or Evolved? Example titles

Your EPQ must not overlap with any of your AS subjects or possible A2 subjects! It is your responsibility to check with your subject teachers about what will be covered over the next 2 years. Topics can be extended, but must not be repeated.

Does your project… Allow for the development and extension of your skills? Allow you to access the higher level concepts and skills in the assessment objectives? Allow you to be clear and focused on a specific issue? Allow you to work independently? Allow you to approach the project impartially? Allow you to be analytical?

Timescales Look at the sheet that must be kept in your folder at all times. Make a note of the deadlines. These are non-negotiable.

By OUR PROJECT PROPOSAL MEETING You should have… Chosen your topic and researched it thoroughly Chosen a title Completed Project Proposal Part A Have a project plan to discuss with me
