What is Forest School? Forest School is a unique philosophy and approach to outdoor play and learning. It involves using the environment and natural resources as a setting and stimulus for learning. A central theme of Forest School is HOLISTIC development with a big focus on CHILD LED learning.

So what does it look like?

Characteristics An outdoor setting – wilder, more free, more risks. Sessions take place in all weathers (except high winds) Sessions are led by Miss Crofton, a trained and qualified leader. There is a high ratio of adults to children. 1:2 usually when using tools. Safety is paramount – children learn to take manageable risks.

Learning and development During forest school sessions children gain development in a variety of ways: A typical forest lesson will always begin by the children completing their own ‘forest risk assessment’. They are able to check for risks (broken branches) and assess situations such as the weather, Children are then able to discuss forest rules e.g., safety call, boundaries, fire circle. By doing this children are managing/assessing their own risk. They will become confident at problem solving and develop vital reasoning skills. These skills will then be applied in other areas.

Forest school activities - Natural art and crafts - Games - Whittling - Den and shelter building - Campfires and cooking - Flora and fauna identification and care - Circle time - Rope skills…knots and lashings! - Safe use of tools - Physical self-awareness - Exploring natural dye and being creative in our mud kitchen!

What does my child need? • Old clothes - we are likely to become muddy! • Warm coats. • Wellington boots or waterproof walking boots. • Long trousers and long sleeved tops must be worn in all types of weather. • Children should wear hats to keep warm or to protect from the sun. • Please ensure that your child is protected by sun cream. • All clothing should be labelled with the child’s name. • We will provide waterproof trousers and jackets for all children to use during sessions.
