Last class we learned some ways to describe matter – physical and chemical properties Today we will look at how matter is classified.

Mixtures Matter that has a constant composition and constant properties throughout a given sample are called substances Combining two or more substances gives you a mixture.

5 4 3 6 7 2 1 8 Mixing Stations Follow the directions at each station You’ll have apprx 7 minutes at each station so work dilligently! 3 6 7 2 1 8

Station 1: Identifying the different types of mixtures: Homogeneous mixtures and Heterogeneous mixtures Station 2: Making different types of mixtures: Create a homogeneous mixture and a heterogeneous mixture using the materials provided Station 3: Separating mixtures: chromatography Station 4: Separating mixtures: Filtration

Station 5: Separating mixtures: Distillation Station 6: Separating mixtures: Quizlet quiz http://quizlet.com/6780731/8-ways-to-separate-mixtures-flash-cards/ If you can beat my score of 45 seconds you’ll earn extra credit! Station 7: Separating mixtures: Magnetism

Station 1: Identifying Homogenous and heterogeneous mixtures Discuss in your group the differences between homogenous and heterogeneous mixtures. Then identify which of the solutions in front of you are homogenous and which are heterogeneous

Station 2: Making mixtures Using the materials in front of you make a homogenous mixture and make a heterogeneous mixture Make sure that you record what combinations made homogenous mixtures and what combinations made heterogeneous mixtures. Also, clean up for the next group!

Station 3: Separating mixtures: chromatography What is chromatography? Use the materials in front of you to separate the substances in the inks of various pens and markers. What markers separated into the most substances? What do you think this means in relationship to the ink composition? Is there more ingredients or less in the pens that you tested?

Station 4: Separating mixtures: Mechanical filtration What is mechanical filtration? With the materials in front of you, find a way to separate the mixture by mechanically separating the substances or by filtering the substances from each other

Station 5: Separating mixtures: Distillation Observe the apparatus. This is showing the process of Distillation After observing the apparatus, what do you think distillation is? How is this a method to separate mixtures?

Station 6: Separating mixtures: Quizlet Go to http://quizlet.com/6780731/scatter If you can beat my score of 45 seconds you’ll earn extra credit! YOU HAVE TO SHOW ME in order to get the extra credit!

Agenda Chemistry 8/26/2014 Homework: Picture scavenger hunt Warm up Go to exittix.com and log in Your Username will be the first letter of your last name followed by your first name. All of the passwords are 123 (change it when you log in) Complete the Describing matter assessment Read section 32-35 from the Chemistry Text “Mixing Stations” TURN IN IPCs! Homework: Picture scavenger hunt

HW: Picture scavenger hunt Monday Night at 11PM Take a picture of the most unique homogeneous mixture and the most unique heterogeneous mixture and upload them to the class’ Google Drive. Make sure that you put your name somewhere in the picture!
