The Empowerment Box

“In looking for people to hire, you look for three qualities: integrity, intelligence, and energy. And if they don't have the first, the other two will kill you.” Warren Buffet

Sample Landscape Company Culture People.  We treat each other with dignity and respect. We recognize and respect every role and its value within the organization. We listen to each other and seek to understand different points of view.   Determination.  We are proactive, problem solvers. We get the job done with an optimistic, can-do attitude.    Empowerment.  We take initiative in making decisions to act in the best interest of our people, customers and suppliers. We give permission and freedom to bring forth new ideas. We embrace continuous improvement to intentionally improve ourselves, our services and reputation.  Integrity.  We do the right thing, even when no one is watching. We are honest with our mistakes, open to feedback and determined to resolve any conflict.  We are professional, maintain high standards, take pride in our work and respect our fellow team members.

Sample Landscape Company Intent DESIRED END STATE.. Within three years, ABC Company will be the premier landscape company in Western NY. Key Requirements . Streamline and develop the capacity to oversee all aspects of recruiting, hiring, talent management, people development, bi-lingual communications, and succession planning in order to unite a diverse workforce and build a high performing team.  Ensure the financial viability of the organization. Know our cost to serve and price accordingly. Selectively choose customers and suppliers. Continue to finance from within and invest in people and growth.   Grow a Values-Based Culture defined by decentralization and empowerment. Standardize the culture across all RM locations in order to build a unified organization.   Expand into new markets and capture a greater portion of the market through the strategic promotion and expansion of all our services.   Elevate all aspect of our work to include quality and safety. Team members are disciplined to follow established procedures.  Ensure all SOPs are relevant and followed across all locations.

Leaders become great, not because of their power, but because of their ability to empower others. - John C. Maxwell Create More Leaders Not Followers

The Role of the Leader Walk the talk with your company values and culture. Define, bring to life, & protect your culture. Get comfortable with empowering others. Embrace people development as a priority. Become a really good coach. Identify potential and develop the leaders you need. Get behind succession planning -- don’t stop until your “bench” is complete. Reproduce yourself -- work yourself out of a job.

Initiative In Action

Do I Need Permission? Is it aligned with Mission and Intent? Is it legal and moral? Is it good for the customer? Are you prepared to take responsibility for the outcome? If the answer to all four questions is YES, you already have my permission.
