Intro. To Bio, Scientific Method, and Graphing Review

An individual living thing Define an organism. An individual living thing

What is a theory? explanation of events or things based on knowledge gained from many observations and investigations; explains “WHY” *Laws explain what happens, but not why it happens

List & describe the properties of living things. 1. Living things are made of cells 2. Living things grow & develop 3. Living things obtain & use energy(metabolism) 4. Living things respond to stimuli 5. Living things have the ability to reproduce 6. Living things evolve.

What is qualitative data? Give an example. Descriptive data that can be OBSERVED but not measured Ex>colors, textures, smells, tastes, appearance

State the scientific method in order. 1. State the problem 2. Research 3. Form a Hypothesis 4. Test the Hypothesis 5. Draw Conclusions

Define hypothesis. Give an example. a short & definitive educated guess that is an “if then” statement

something that may be changed or manipulated during an experiment Define variable something that may be changed or manipulated during an experiment

Define homeostasis. The body’s ability to regulate its internal physiology to maintain stability in response to fluctuations in the outside environment

What is quantitative data? Give an example. data which can be measured with numbers Ex>length, height, area, volume, weight, speed, time, temperature, humidity, cost sound levels

NO! A theory can be proven incorrect at anytime… Is a theory always true? NO! A theory can be proven incorrect at anytime…

What is the experimental variable? what is being tested in the experiment

What does the prefix bio mean? life

How are scientific hypotheses tested? in a controlled experiment containing only one experimental variable.

How do scientists share their research results? Publishing in journals & presenting at meetings

Controlled experiment The ability to reproduce results is an important part of any __________. Controlled experiment

Define independent variable. the variable that is controlled by the experimenter What you change or manipulate in the experiment

Define dependent variable. The variable that is directly affected by the independent variable; the result of what happens because of the introduction of the independent variable

Where is the independent variable located on a graph? The X axis

Where is the dependent variable located on a graph? The Y axis

In a controlled experiment, a scientist Should isolate and test how many variables? 1

Biology- the study of life Define biology. Biology- the study of life

Define the scientific method. Precise method used by scientists that separates science from other ways of studying & learning.

What is an inference? Give an example. A logical explanation that is NOT a known fact

What is the control group in an experiment? The group that is not exposed to the independent variable. Experimental group is exposed to the independent variable….

Pick out the independent and dependent variables from a scenario. Make sure you can….. Pick out the independent and dependent variables from a scenario. Analyze a data table
