Literary Analysis Writing

The sentence that says what your entire paper will be about. Example: In Monster, the main character can be compared to the main characters in To Be Heard because they live in rough neighborhoods and need to express themselves. Thesis Statement

Body Paragraph The main paragraphs of your essay. Each one will look like this: TS (Topic Sentence) SCD (Speaker and Concrete Detail) CM (Commentary) CS (Concluding Sentence) Body Paragraph

Topic Sentence (Black) Says what the paragraph will be about. Introduces the first topic from your thesis. Ex: Steve and the teens in the movie live in challenging environments. Topic Sentence (Black)

Concrete Detail and Speaker (Red) Evidence. A sentence from the story that gives an example of your topic. Ex: Steve says, “People will think I’m a monster just because of where I come from.” Concrete Detail and Speaker (Red)

Commentary (Green) Explain the meaning of the quote. Don’t just summarize it. 2-3 sentences Ex: Steve is afraid of people judging him because of where he lives. Anthony also feels that life has given him many opportunities growing up in the Bronx and that even though he gets in trouble, he really would give up anything to get out and make something of his life. Commentary (Green)

Closing Sentence (Black) Last sentence in the paragraph. Restate your main point. Ex: Steve and Anthony are afraid of people only seeing them as bad. Closing Sentence (Black)
