Focus on Quality Quality Improvement Tools Purdue Healthcare Advisors Kelley Gillaspy, BS, LPC, CMPE

Objectives of Today’s Call and Tools Identify three tools for quality improvement and review each one Tools Reviewed Affinity Diagram Impact to Effort Matrix Project Scoping Tool Gantt Chart or Completion Chart

Affinity Diagrams The affinity diagram organizes a large number of ideas into their natural relationships. This method taps a team’s creativity and intuition Used to group ideas generated by brainstorming Subgroups of common themes or common relationships Help synthesize large amounts of data by finding relationships between ideas Can be used to determine WHAT project to do OR within a project

Impact to Effort Matrix After brainstorming and affinitizing, use an Impact to Effort matrix to determine which project makes the most sense to proceed with (RIE’s and JDIs) I mpac t Rapid Improvement Event (RIE) Low Effort High impact Project High Effort High Impact   Just do it (JDI) Low Impact **Maybe a Lean Daily Improvement Project Don’t do it Low Impact E f f o r t

Scoping Tool Scope the Project ~ Project scope is the part of project planning that involves determining and documenting a list of specific project goals, deliverables, features, functions, tasks, deadlines, and ultimately costs. In other words, it is what needs to be achieved and the work that must be done to deliver a project.

Gantt Chart/Completion Chart Keeps the Project on Target, Staff Engaged, Team Members Held Accountable A Gantt chart is a bar chart that shows the tasks of a project, when each must take place and how long each will take. As the project progresses, bars are shaded to show which tasks have been completed. Gantt can be used to Plan a Project Gantt can be used within the Project Shading of the bars provides a visual progress cue Big picture Project visual – project management tool Completion Charts used within the Project More specific with Owner, due date, and Status Event specific and used within RIEs All other criteria means that all attempts to reach patient must be documented to be able to bill for the service if contact is made outside of 2 days
