WARM UP 1/26/2009[5 min] Last week we discussed the definition of a real “hero”—someone brave, willing to sacrifice him/herself for other people, etc. Today, we are reading “Titanic,” a real ship that sunk and killed thousands of people back in the early 1900’s. Imagine that you are on board the “Titanic” as it is sinking—what are your thoughts/feelings. Would you worry about saving others, or saving yourself? Explain your answer. Timer

F.Y.I. Ever heard of a movie or television show that says…. NO NOTES F.Y.I. Ever heard of a movie or television show that says…. BASED/INSPIRED BY ACTUAL EVENTS?

F.Y.I. “Based/inspired by actual events” TAKE NOTES F.Y.I. “Based/inspired by actual events” It is non-fictional (based on some truth), but contains fictional (made up) elements.

Shifting Gears: Non-Fiction NO NOTES Shifting Gears: Non-Fiction Today, we read “Titanic,” which is a non-fiction story. While reading, I’ll play clips from Titanic the movie (1997).

Before we begin… There are two types of Irony: TAKE NOTES Before we begin… There are two types of Irony: Situational: when expectation does not match with reality. Dramatic: when the reader knows something BIG and the character does not.

NO NOTES Titanic Turn to pg. 390 When we encounter irony, you can laugh…it’s ok!
