Third Grade Newsletter GIFTED GAZETTE 2.4 Nov. 6th - Nov. 10th What we’re learning this week… Spelling, Vocabulary, & Test Schedule Reading: Nonfiction Text This week we will… identify and use nonfiction text features to locate information in an article apply strategies to read and comprehend informational articles and books use context clues to determine the meaning of words used in text Language/Writing: form and use the simple verb tenses (I walked, I walk, I will walk) use a “mentor sentence” to apply grammar skills circle through the steps in the writing process as we begin writing informative essays using our dog breed/pet care research Spelling: silent letters Math: This week we will… apply properties of operations as strategies to multiply and divide. If 6 × 4 = 24 is known, then 4 × 6 = 24 is also known. (Commutative property) 3 × 5 × 2 can be found by 3 × 5 = 15, then 15 × 2 = 30, or by 5 × 2 = 10, then 3 × 10 = 30. (Associative property) Knowing that 8 × 5 = 40 and 8 × 2 = 16, one can find 8 × 7 as 8 × (5 + 2) = (8 × 5) + (8 × 2) = 40 + 16 = 56. (Distributive property.) enrichment of curriculum through Math Stars problem solving and Math Merchants class store Project of the Week (P.O.W.): due Friday Research: Our in-class research to build knowledge around dog breeds/pet care coincides with our nonfiction reading unit. Properties of multiplication assessed this week. A note from the teachers I just wanted to clear up some ELA HW expectations. There should be a response MENU in your child’s reading HW. After reading for at least 15 minutes, please choose one response to complete. Those will be checked on Thursday. Additionally, a worksheet multiple choice packet will be given out on Monday and will be replacing Spelling HW. It will be checked for accuracy during workstations on Thursday. Please make sure your child completes those two things each week. Math HW will continue to change nightly. Please let me know if you have any questions. 3rd Grade Baton Rouge Field Trip is Tuesday 11/7.
