Can Good Nutrition Taste Good?

Nutrition Nutrition is the sum total of the processes involved in the taking in and the utilization of food substances by which growth, repair and maintenance of the body are accomplished… Carbohydrates Fiber Fats Protein Vitamins Minerals Water All seven must be consumed from the food we eat.

Nutrients Starch – many glucose molecules bonded together; this is a tiny starch molecule Carbohydrates – sugars and starches – provide needed energy for daily activities; excess carbohydrates will be used to make fats One glucose molecule – most common sugar in your body

Nutrients Fiber – is actually a carbohydrate – cellulose – that makes up plant cell walls; surprise – we are not cows with special bacteria or termites with special bacteria  WE cannot digest this; but it helps us to be regular; it provides needed bulk to our food. Similar to starch it is made of glucose molecules, but the bonds between these glucose is not able to be broken by our digestive enzymes.

Fats Animal fats – lard, fat on steak or chicken Fat – highest energy storing molecules; excess is stored in fat cells; excess fat should be avoided, but every new body cell that is made needs a lot of fat molecules to make it; animal fats can make deposits in arteries Plant oils – liquid at room temp

Nutrients Protein – very large molecules that are made of amino acids; all of our cells have them and need them; but our muscles need a whole lot of them. Eating meat, beans, peas and other seeds are great sources of proteins. This is a very small portion of a protein. Compared to the other nutrients, this is huge! http://www.rcsb.org/pdb/explore/jmol.do?structureId=1MSO&bionumber=1

Astronaut Food Cannot depend on refrigeration If your family goes camping or on a picnic, there are certain foods you usually take because it makes sense on that kind of a trip. Your folks do not take a pot roast to cook on a grill. Have you ever thought about what an astronaut’s food would be? Cannot depend on refrigeration Must be able to last for months Cannot require cooking Must provide the astronaut with all of the needed nutrients Must take up a very small amount of space Must not create a great deal of trash To some degree – it must taste good

Ummm, ummm Good! Astronaut’s diet has to have low iron. Iron is important for our Red blood cells, but in space astronauts have fewer red blood cells and the excess iron would make them sick.

Percentage Daily Values Middle School Students Calorie Intake by the USDA Boys – 9 – 13  1400- 2200 14 – 18  2000 – 3200 Girls – 9 – 13  1400 – 2200 14 – 18  1800 – 2400 Lower values for less active individuals. http://www.schooltube.com/video/8b5b475d98ac476fbdb8/Bill-Nye-Nutrition

Regular vs. Baked Potato Chips Why do you think the fat and carbohydrate values are different on these chips? Which do you like?

For your food item! In your interactive notebook write Food Portion Lab Next, write the food you will measure. Look at the food label Find the mass of one serving Use the scale – mass the cup given to you Add that mass to the mass of one serving and add enough food to balance the scale at that number. Answer the questions: Were you surprised that this was one serving? If you eat more than one serving of this, how many calories would it be?

Homework!!!! Bring a food label to school on Monday! If necessary, you can bring it in as a picture, but a can label or box label is perfect!
