L.O: TBAT understand how to evaluate Evaluating a Text L.O: TBAT understand how to evaluate OR

What does ‘evaluation’ mean? This skill focuses on showing you understand the overall message and ideas in a text. You will need to use evidence to support your views.

Overall, which platform is more effective? I agree that Facebook is an effective platform because it has a variety of functions including messaging, picture sharing and link sharing. By focusing the users’ attention on their friends’ feed, it encourages us to take interest in what others are doing and also keep connections going that may otherwise disappear. Overall, Facebook provides the user with as much access to the news and outside world as they please. I agree that Instagram is a strong and effective platform, however there are some limits to it. It can also be considered negative because it can encourage low self-esteem in teenagers with the filters – this makes it easy to present your life as ‘perfect’. For example, the Kardashians can easily present unrealistic beauty ideals that can effect young people. Overall, I think that Instagram does not offer a positive outlet that so many of its users may need. Address your opinion Explain your thinking Provide evidence Consider the reader Sum up your overall thoughts Where have these points been used here?

Evaluating a Piece of Writing Reading the opening to Never Let Me Go Where are we? What is going on? Who is involved? What do we know about them?   What is likely to come next?

Question 4 (20 minutes) A student, having read this section of the text, said: “This part of the text, explaining who Kathy is and what she does, is disturbing because it is not completely clear what is happening” To what extent do you agree? In your response, you could: • consider your own impressions of how Kathy feels • evaluate how Kathy describes her work • support your opinions with references to the text.

Read the text through again: can you find anything that is “disturbing” or “not completely clear”?

Evaluating I agree with the statement because… However, I also think that…
