InveStig8: Academic Honesty

InveSti8: Academic Honesty To complete your InveSti8 work successfully, you need to know; * What plagiarism actually is * That it happens in different ways * That it has severe consequences * Ways to avoid doing it

InveSti8: Academic Honesty What is Plagiarism? To … “take (the work or idea of someone else) and pass it off as one’s own.”

InveSti8: Academic Honesty How do I know this? I copied the definition from the Compact Oxford English Dictionary online and pasted it into this presentation https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/plagiarism

InveSti8: Academic Honesty Is this OK? It is, as long as I make it clear that I am using someone else’s words or ideas and provide the details of where I found (sourced) the information

InveSti8: Academic Honesty Plagiarism is also… Presenting any piece of work as your own that doesn’t have original content in (for example, you have just presented a series of other peoples ideas and opinions without adding any original thoughts or ideas of your own) (I didn’t copy this, I wrote it myself having read a number of different articles and websites about plagiarism)

InveSti8: Academic Honesty Is this OK? Again yes – as long as I say that I based my ideas on reading the following websites http://ed.ted.com/lessons/the-punishable-perils-of-plagiarism-melissa-huseman-d-annunzio#watch http://www.findingdulcinea.com/guides/Education/Plagiarism-Prevention.html http://www.etsu.edu/uged/etsu1000/documents/Plagiarism_Lesson_Plan.pdf http://pages.turnitin.com/rs/iparadigms/images/Turnitin_WhitePaper_PlagiarismSpectrum.pdf http://www.plagiarism.org/ http://www.csus.edu/indiv/s/stonerm/Understanding%20Plagiarism%20Workshop%20Lesson%20Written%20Lesson%20Plan.pdf https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/717/02/

InveSti8: Academic Honesty So is it still OK to copy and paste? Yes – as long as a) You admit that you are doing it by showing that it is someone else’s work/ideas b) You don’t do it too much and remember to include more of your own thoughts than someone else’s c) You complete a reference or citation to show where the work is from

InveSti8: Academic Honesty Other forms of Plagiarism Copying another student’s work Even though another Year 10 student may not be a published author, copying what they have written is plagiarism

InveSti8: Academic Honesty Other forms of Plagiarism Faking sources or data If you make up some data and claim it is from a real source or find some good data but forget where it is from and make up the source, both of these are plagiarism.

InveSti8: Academic Honesty Other forms of Plagiarism Changing the words or structure of a piece of writing Even if you copy someone’s writing but change key words to others with similar meaning, this is still considered plagiarism

InveSti8: Academic Honesty Other forms of Plagiarism Copying your own work Yes! you can even plagiarise your own work. If you did a project in Science and another similar project in I&S and decided to copy a paragraph from your own work – this is still plagiarism!

InveSti8: Academic Honesty What are the Consequences? The consequences are very severe! At IB Diploma level you can be disqualified from all subjects for one piece of plagiarism …and all coursework is checked!

InveSti8: Academic Honesty How to avoid it 1. Don’t copy and paste and be original! 2. Always give citations for information you use that is not your own. 3. Show where you found your information by adding a bibliography

InveSti8: Academic Honesty In the Plagiarism & Referencing folder there are resources to help you including… The Zombie Apocalypse guide to referencing

InveSti8: Academic Honesty Also use the references sheet to record where you are finding information about your topic
