HCS Summer Reading Edith K. Pickens March 7, 2013

HCS Summer Reading The purpose of summer reading is to encourage students to practice reading skills and to develop an enjoyment for reading contemporary novels. We want to encourage all HCS stakeholders to become involved in the summer reading. The plan for summer reading was developed by two committees representing high schools and middle schools. These committees have been at work on the summer reading project for 12 months.

and Community Partners HCS Summer Reading Committee and Community Partners

High Schools and Middle Schools Summer Reading for High Schools and Middle Schools All students in grades 9 – 12 will read the same novel. All students in grades 6-8 will also have a common novel to read. Students who participate in honors and AP courses will have additional reading requirements, which will be posted on the HCS website.

Huntsville City Schools Big Read “Summer Sizzles With a Good Book”

HCS Summer Reading We want families, teachers, administrators, community members and board members to participate in selecting the novel for summer reading. You will vote on one novel out of the selections, chosen by our reading committee. Thank you to Rena Anderson for setting up our voting, which will be posted on the HCS school website on the front page. All community members are invited to preview the novels and vote for one novel for high school and one novel for middle school.

HCS Summer Reading Voting will be from April 4 – 12 and the selected novel will be announced on April 18. Students will be provided a list of options for the required assignment that will accompany summer reading at the end of the school year. Teachers who opt to give a test on summer reading will be provided resources so that they can teach the novel prior to testing.

High School Selections

Summer Reading for Middle Schools

Summer Reading Summary Please review the books and vote April 4 – April 12. One novel will be selected by majority vote for grades 9-12 and one novel will be selected by majority vote for grades 6-8. Summer reading selections will be announced on our website on April 18. A committee is developing the authentic assessment for students. Students will have some choices to make in the type of assessment they will complete and turn in to their English/Reading teacher the first week of school. Assignments will be posted on the HCS in May.
