Spanish 4 with Dr. Valerio Intermediate Spanish ¡Bienvenidos!

Expectations… Bring your book to every class Take notes Use the textbook website and CD-ROM Use other on-line resources (many listed on my website) www.lhup.edu/evalerio Complete workbook exercises Practice outside of class

LABEL YOUR WORK Your Name (PRINT legibly don’t sign) SPAN 202- ___ (course-section number) Assignment Label Prep for Composition #____ (if applicable) Draft Composition #____ Final Revision Composition #____ Presentation (also list partners if applicable)

Practice Hints Concentrate effort toward adopting the sounds of Spanish. Practice sounds you know you have trouble with using a variety of different words. (Traditional trouble sounds… r, d, v, q, t ) No vowel reduction (schwa) Keep all letter sounds short compared to English. No expulsion of air as in English p, t, k, etc. Adopt the vowels as they are in Spanish

Other hints… Listen to Spanish being spoken while looking at a written text of the same words. Stop the video/CD/audiotape from time to time and try to say the same thing the speaker just said.

Other hints… Seek out native speakers willing to talk with you. Watch Spanish television programs when possible. Rent Spanish videos from your local library, view Spanish clips on the Internet.

Other hints… Develop meaningful vocabulary that is related—It is advisable to learn vocabulary the way you did in language classes… Think of words you would need to discuss a particular subject. Look up a set of words that would assist you in such a discussion or written topic. Expand your list to include “however,” “therefore,” and other connecting words.

Other hints… Spend time reviewing known words and adding new words to your vocabulary. Whisper Spanish as often as you can to refine your pronunciation and review phrasing of certain word combinations. Practice reading aloud. Use the phonetic rules you know and develop an authentic “flow of language” as you read. You don’t have to understand everything in order to do this...
