Foibles of Journal Data ISSNs & Multiple Records

Foible 1 – Applying ISSNs incorrectly Foible 2 – Creating multiple records. Even when you exclude language other than English, only 1% have a single title.

Breakdown of OCLC Record Counts for JSTOR Titles 7.8% (238 titles) have more than 50 records <1% (12 titles) have a single record 92% (2,847 titles) have 2-10 records

Like Looking for a Needle in a Haystack

Breakdown of OCLC Record Counts For JSTOR’s English Language, Print Records 9% (270 titles) have more than 10 records 18% (547 titles) have a single English, print record 73% (2,245 titles) have 2-10 records

JSTOR Records Cleanup Project Goals Reduce the number of duplicate records for JSTOR titles. Calculate the costs for reducing the number of catalog records for print serials. Improve available metadata for collection management. Create a plan to: Review the application of ISSNs in records and correct incorrect records. Review multiple records and request to have OCLC merge duplicates. Invite input : Share the plan with serials catalogers, listen to concerns, and revise the plan if necessary. Begin the project – ~Sept 2017 Communicate results via PAN listserv or written report for next PAN meeting.
