Written Task 2

Written Task 2 Guidelines You are focusing on language analysis to construct a short, formal written essay analyzing a text or related texts of your choice. You will have a prescribed question that you must be answering within your essay. Your essay will be 800-1,000 words in length with a focus on using language and techniques to respond to a chosen prescribed question from IB. You must also submit a 3 level outline that clearly outlines your purpose for the task. Written Task 2 requires a Works Cited page for your texts & in-text citations when applicable.

Outline (2 points) Must include: The prescribed question that has been chosen The title of the text(s) being used for analysis The part of the course to which the task refers (Part 2: Language & Mass Communication) Think about language topics you can focus on with your question Three level outline that clearly highlights the particular focus of the task investigated. Intro & conclusion on the final essay

3 Level Outline Format THESIS: (in a complete sentence…make sure you answer your Q) Body Thesis Statement: You will have 2-3 of these for an 800-1,000 word essay. (Must be in a complete sentence and must be an argument) Evidence (depending on text type, may or may not be a direct quote) Analysis Evidence

IB Prescribed questions 6 designated questions chosen by IB based on 3 different categories focusing on aims of all four parts of the course. You will only be choosing 1 question out of the 6 possibilities. The three categories are: Reader, culture, & text Power and privilege Text and genre Each category includes two possible questions to choose from. You will only be working with ONE question of your choice.

Reader, culture, & Text prescribed questions 1. How could the text be read and interpreted differently by two different readers? (Consider different perspectives looking at one particular text or multiple texts) 2. If the text had been written in a different time or place or language or for a different audience, how and why might it be different?

Power and Privilege Prescribed Questions 1. How and why is a social group represented in a particular way? 2. Which social groups are marginalized, excluded, or silenced within a text?

Text and genre Prescribed questions 1. How does the text conform to, or deviate from, the conventions of a particular genre, and for what purpose? Consider something groundbreaking at the time or new 2. How has the text borrowed from other texts and to what effect? Consider use of religious allusions, historical allusions, structure, etc. in different texts.

Example topics (Can use any time period up through modern day) Examining portrayals of men and women in advertising Examining the use of gender in propaganda Examining the use of religious allusions within speeches, propaganda, or advertising Exclusion of particular groups of people in advertising, campaign ads, etc. Examining different groups of people being offended by the same advertisement(s) Examine the use of particular advertisements or campaign ads that were controversial or groundbreaking at the time and the resulting impact. Examining how particular individuals protesting social issues are represented by the media using different forms (different news stations, different newspapers, etc.)

Topics & A warning Must not overlap with your FOA, your History IA, or your EE Multiple people can focus on the same topic (ie gender in advertising) but if you choose the exact same ads and have the exact same papers, that will be problematic. DO NOT work together on these. Don’t take the chance. Choose something YOU are interested in.

Make good choices! Choose something you are interested in that you can use language techniques to analyze. Choose a question you know you can answer clearly and effectively. Choose texts that you understand and that you know will help you answer your question. Choose to not put this off until the last minute because it seems easy.

Feedback on the Written task 2 I’m not allowed to give you written feedback on these, but I can talk to you in person as much as you want. You will be doing another WT2 next year, and you get to choose which one you would like to submit to IB out of the two. You will do the same with WT1, which I’ll talk about next semester. These will be rubric graded (quick turnaround before finals)
