Focusing on Characters and Symbols in American Tall Tales Tall Tales Project! Focusing on Characters and Symbols in American Tall Tales

What is a “Tall Tale?” A type of genre that is also known as a “folktale” Usually a tall tale has a “larger than life” hero (meaning the hero does many things that could not actually be possible in real life) Usually the text also includes “hyperbole” (which is just an exaggeration, like: “he was as tall as a 10-story building!”)

Tall Tales Characters

Tall Tales Characters

Details of Tall Tale Project You will choose a tall tale character randomly The character you choose is the one you must stick with for your presentation

Details of Tall Tale Project Once you have chosen your character, Ms. Heather has a reading provided for you. Some readings are tall tales and others are just information. Many tall tale characters were actually alive at some point, but stories were created to make them seem “larger than life” and more incredible than they actually were

Details of Tall Tale Project We will do some work in class, and some work outside of class. The purpose is to learn and have fun, so don’t take it to seriously but still put forth effort! This is a graded assignment so please treat it like a test.

Details of Tall Tale Project You must also do some research at home about your subject. The work we do in class will match with your homework, so don’t forget to do the homework or you will be very, VERY unprepared for class! Let’s start!

Character Drawing Choose one piece of paper from the hat. Then, write the name and details of the character on your paper.

First Part of Your Project With the piece of paper provided, do some research on your character. I have included some websites that may help you. Please use your own words when you write, otherwise you are stealing someone else’s writing and hard work!

Phase 1: Research & become familiar with your character Project Phases Phase 1: Research & become familiar with your character Phase 2: Develop your own Tall Tale about your character Phase 3: Create a story board about your story & Present!
