7.1 Deviance and Social Control Deviance: behavior that departs from societal or group norms. -crimminal behavior -hippies -card players -subjective Negative Deviance: involves behavior that underconforms to accepted norms. Positive Deviance: involves behavior that overconforms to social expectation. Conformity: behavior that matches group expectations Positive: Not that it’s a good thing but that they overachieve the goal. When deviance continues crime occurs. Registration system: retinal scan, a digital voice recordording, , a DNA sample, fingerprints, joined by your ss number. Carry one card for ss, drivers license, voter registration. Demanded ransom over the phone we could quickly fins out who the person is. Not everyone agrees what deviant behavior is – it’s subjective and it changes over time.

Social Control Social Control: Ways to encourage conformity to society’s norms. Internal: lies within the individual External: Social Sanctions Social Sanctions: rewards or punishments that encourage conformity to social norms.
