Female Reproductive System
Female Reproductive System
Female Reproductive System Front
Function Produce female sex hormones (estrogen) and store eggs (ova); egg (ovum); aka female gametes. Stored? Female sex glands – Ovaries (female gomads) Born have over 400,000 immature eggs. Puberty, pituitary gland allows the ova to mature How does this differ from Males? Once maturity hits, OVULATION occurs: mature ovum gets released into the fallopian tubes each month.
Fallopian Tubes- Ovulation
Female Reproductive Organs Ovaries: Stores the ova; Produce Hormones Uterus: protects fertilized ovum until birth – a fetus develops Fallopian Tubes: ova travel from ovaries to the uterus via the fallopian tubes; pair of tubes with fingerlike projections Cilia: tiny hair-like projections located in the fallopian tubes Vagina: passageway from the uterus to outside of body aka birth canal – what fetus travels through
Menstruation Shedding of the Uterine Wall If egg is released and is not fertilized by sperm, endometrium wall sheds (lining of the uterine wall), breaks down into blood, fluids – A PERIOD. Tissue passes through cervix (opening of Uterus into Vagina) Menstrual cycle occurs during puberty. Irregular in beginning and usually becomes regular cycle. Occurs from Puberty to menopause Menopause – body stops producing levels of estrogen and eggs top being released from ovaries.
Menstruation Cycle
Unfertilized vs. Fertilized Ovum
Maintain Bathe Regular check-ups – Girls should visit their first gynecologist between the ages of 13-15. (specializes in the treatment of the female reproductive system) Self-Check ups; Self Breast exam pg. 455
Problems Menstrual Cramps AKA Dismenorrhea Pains in the belly and pelvic area Affect more than 50% of women Why does this happen? When the egg is not fertilized by sperm, no pregnancy occurs and lining of uterus is no longer needed. Lining of the uterus become swollen and is eventually shed and is replaced by new lining in next cycle. Old uterine lining breaks down, compounds are released causing uterine contractions, constricting blood supply to endometrium. Contraction blocks delivery of oxygen to tissue of endometrium which breaks down and dies. In turn, uterine contracts squeezing out old endometrial tissue through cervix.
Problems Premenstrual Syndrome AKA (PMS) Physical and emotional symptoms related to normal ovulatory hormonal function Usually occurs 10 days PRIOR to woman getting her menstrual period More than 200 symptoms have been identified with a woman having PMS 3 most popular: Irritability Tension Dysphoria (unhappiness)
Problems Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) Rare but serious bacterial infection Involved fever, shock, and problems with organs Causes? Was known to be caused by women who were using tampons during periods Change tampon as often as needed.
Other Problems Endometriosis- Uterine wall grows in other areas of the body; May lead to pain, irregular bleeding STDs- spread during sexual activity; May cause infertility especially left untreated. Some STD signs don’t occur for years. Vaginitis- inflammation or infection of the vagina; common among women. Causes: bacteria, yeast, viruses, other parasites. Ovarian Cysts- fluid-filled sacs on the ovaries; vary in size. Affect women of all ages and may lead to cancer. Cervical, Uterine, and Ovarian Cancer: Human Papillomavirus (HPV) increases your chance of getting cervical cancer.
