How to Write a Lab Report

Learning Objectives Describe the different parts of a lab report Write a complete lab report

Title The Title should be less than 10 words and reflect the factual content of the paper The gene cortex controls mimicry and crypsis in butterflies and moths

Abstract The abstract is a summary of the report including the data presented and conclusions

Introduction The introduction states your hypothesis Should include: 1. Why was this study performed? 2. What knowledge already exists about this subject? 3. What is the specific purpose of this study?

Materials and Methods The materials and methods details how you tested your hypothesis Should include: 1. What materials were used? 2. How were they used? 3. Where and when was the work done?

Results The results section should summarize the data from the experiments without discussing what it means. Data should be organized in: 1. Tables 2. Figures 3. Graphs 4. Photographs

Discussion The discussion considers whether the data you obtained supports the hypothesis Could include: 1. Speculation 2. Suggestions for improvement 3. Acceptance or rejection of hypothesis 4. Suggest future experiments
