Statistical Information Framework at CSO - A Beginning maureen.delamere@cso.ie CSO Ireland Dissemination Working Group May 2008

The purpose of developing a Statistical Information Framework (SIF) is twofold User To give users easy access to necessary and relevant statistical information Provider To allow statistical areas publish and manage their statistical information in a coherent and systematic way

Role of Metadata Find it Understand it Evaluate it

Some principles that arose A common terminology - MCV Metadata should be to a publishing standard Ownership of metadata with statistics area One updateable source for metadata – reusability 2-way linkage between metadata and data where possible Standalone metadata items must be capable of being uniquely referenced Metadata items that can standalone must have the necessary discovery metadata associated with it Clearly distinguish between point in time and current

MOM Online Database Releases Publications Statistical Product Subject Tree Statistical Product Classification MOM Metadata Object Management

DMS Other statistical systems DMS .px Internal CSO Release/Publication Recommended Approach to Data Dissemination for CSO One source file for Databank and Release Disseminate database .px Internal CSO Release/Publication Uses data from .px file Databank

Possible wire view on a statistical product Statistics -> Consumer Prices Overview Release/Publication Online Database Further Information Definitions 1. Consumer Price Index<link> Classifications 1. Region<link> Documents/Links 1. Calculation of CPI Index<link>

Possible Wire view on a concept description Statistics -> Consumer Prices Related Definitions Definitions <link> 1. Consumer Price Index is defined as …. Relevant Statistical Products i) Consumer Prices <link>

Metadata Registry (incl product link management) Modular Approach Application to manage and update metdata User application Metadata Registry (incl product link management) Standard Definitions International Metadata reports Releases/ Publications Structure Free Metadata Docs Classifications Online Database Manage links with statistical products, survey/production systems? Linking metadata within Database tables

Considerations Standardisation of Structures Existing users Do not move existing content, document its location Evolution ‘Statistical Product’ V ‘Survey’ (Production System) Identifying a roadmap to implementation Flexibility in the approach
