Transitions in speech and writing In English, you should never start a sentence with “And”, “But”, or “So”. These are conjunctions used to connect two clauses within a sentence. Ex. I like cheese, and I love pizza. I like cheese. And I also love pizza. I like cheese, but I hate yogurt. I like cheese. But I hate yogurt.

How should I begin instead of “But”? These transitions can all be used instead of “But” to begin a sentence to show CONTRAST: However, Nevertheless, Still, Despite that, In contrast, Even so, I love milk. But I don’t love cheese. I love milk, but I don’t love cheese. I love milk. However, I don’t love cheese.

How should I begin instead of “And”? These transitions can all be used instead of “And” to begin a sentence to show ADDITION: In addition, Additionally, Furthermore, Moreover, Plus, Also, I love roses. And my girlfriend loves them. I love roses, and my girlfriend loves them. I love roses. Also, my girlfriend loves them.

How should I begin instead of “So”? These transitions can all be used instead of “So” to begin a sentence to show a RESULT (cause & effect relationship): That’s why As a result, Therefore, Consequently, The Avengers was popular. So it made a lot of money. The Avengers was popular, so it made a lot of money. The Avengers was popular. As a result, it made a lot of money.

Is it OK to begin a sentence with “Because”? Yes. However, because is always used in a sentence with two clauses, one showing cause, the other showing effect. For example: I love Dan. (effect) He is funny. (cause) Because Dan is funny, I love him. I love Dan because he is funny. I love Dan. Because he is funny. (fragment)

Timed Writing: Write one paragraph of at least 100 words with a title and proper format describing: A new plant or animal you would like to develop – OR – The most important crop (or livestock) in Korea A form of biotechnology you think is a good (or bad) idea Please be sure to use at least three transitions in your supporting sentences. Don’t forget to INDENT, use a topic sentence, supporting sentences, and a concluding sentence!
