The Job of an Author By Matthew Reid

What types of jobs can an author have? Many different options include the jobs of a copywriter, journalist, novelist, web writer, or editor. Being an author allows you to work for yourself or a large business. 1 2 1 Someone who writes the words for advertisements or other similar material. 2 Someone who writes for newspapers, magazines, etc.

How much could an author get paid? A copywriter can make $43,367-$54,043 a year. A journalist makes about $45,925 a year. A Novelist(someone who writes books) makes around $46,990-$48640 a year. A web writer normally makes between $46,082-$54,076 a year. Editors make about $56,950-$74,792 in 365 days. The average writer makes between $38,150-$75,600 in 12 months.

Do you need any special abilities for the job Yes, some of the skills are reasoning, observation, problem solving, grammar skills, proper spelling, accurate punctuation, fearlessness, and communication. Author also need to be creative, patient, and able to research. Strong computer skills are also recommended. 1 2 1 Being able to see what is going on in the world around you. 2 Being able to receive and use criticism to help you grow as an author.

What education or training is needed? According to the BLS a professional writer usually needs a college degree. Some employers like their employees to have a bachelor degree in the Arts of English, Journalism, or Communications. For a writer that works in a certain field, they should have a degree in that field. If you work for yourself you don’t have to have a college degree. 1 1 Bureau of Labor Statistics

Some schools that offer writing programs are… Arizona State University, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Northeastern University(in Boston) University of Massachusetts Lowell University of Central Florida, College of Arts and Humanities. University of Colorado Denver American University(in Washington D.C.)

Who is someone famous from this job field? J. K. Rowling is the author of the famous Harry Potter series. Here is her story… Joanne Rowling’s world was rocked after her mother died. She ended up living off of welfare and working on the first Harry Potter book. She was dirt poor and jobless. Rowling actually thought of the three main characters (Hermione, Harry, and Ron) while waiting for a delayed train. Joanne had the “K.” added to her name because an obviously female author might deter the demographic of young boys. Rowling’s Harry Potter series sold like gold and made over 3.6 billion dollars. 1 1 An audience or group of people

How do you feel about what you’ve learned? I think that I will definitely write in the future, however it will probably be more of a hobby than a job. I really enjoy writing but it doesn’t seem stable enough to be my career.
