The work of servant leaders—your work—is to open a way for God to work through you and the resources available to you in a particular ministry area, for you are about God’s work. As stewards of the mysteries of God, servant leaders are entrusted with the precious and vital task of managing and using God’s gifts in the ongoing work of transformation. WHAT ARE THE DUTIES OF THE LOCAL CHURCH BOARD OF TRUSTEES? Definition– Paragraphs 2525-2551, Book of Discipline 2016 .Membership – Board consists of not fewer than three nor more than nine persons, recommended that at east one-third be laywomen, and that at east one-third be laymen. Must be of legal age, and at least two-thirds be professing members of the United Methodist Church. The pastor is not a voting member unless elected as a member. DUTIES OF BOARD OF TRUSTEES - CONTINUED The Board of trustees shall provide for the security of its funds, keep an accurate record of its proceedings, and report to the charge conference. NOTE: The Charge Conference has authority over the Board of Trustees. OFFICERS: The Board of Trustees elect their own officers each year: Chairperson, vice chairperson, secretary, and if required, a treasurer.
DUTIES OF BOARD OF TRUSTEES - CONTINUED Meetings: Meet at call of the pastor or chairperson at least annually. NOTE: A majority of the members of trustees shall constitute a quorum. Typically, Board of Trustees has supervision, oversight, and care of all real property, and may not prevent or interfere with the pastor in the use of any property for religions services or other proper meetings or purposes.
DUTIES OF BOARD OF TRUSTEES - CONTINUED INSURANCE; Annually compare the existence and adequacy of the church’s insurance coverages. NOTE: THE ANNUAL CONFERENCE BOARD OF TRUSTEES REQUIRE MINIMUM COVERAGES AS OUTLINED IN THE CONFERENCE JOURNAL. Chairperson conducts Annual review of parsonage, along with pastor-parish relations committee representative. All bequests are received by Board of Trustees. DUTIES OF BOARD OF TRUSTEES - CONTINUED If local church is not incorporated, Board of Trustees are encouraged to incorporate. Any real property owned by an incorporated church may be sold, transferred leased, etc., must have the following: Written consent of pastor and district superintendent. Any required contract, deed, bill of sale, mortgage, etc., signed by two officers of Board of Trustees. Report to Charge Conference annually on all actions taken, inventory of property and valuation, insurance coverage. See paragraph 2550 for complete list. INCORPORATION!!
