What is a Fishery? Targeted fish population, the aquatic habitat and associated species, and people associated with the capture and/or other use of the species
Recreational Vs. Commercial Sustenance
EXAMPLE OF A FISHERY
What is Fisheries Science? A multidisciplinary area of research, including fishing technology, biology, economics, and management. Obtaining basic knowledge.
What is Fisheries Management? Applying knowledge gained through basic research to manipulate aquatic organisms, aquatic environments, and their human users to produce sustainable benefits to people.
What is Fisheries Management? Manipulation of aquatic organisms, aquatic environments, and their human users to produce sustainable benefits to people.

Essentials of a Good Fisheries Manager Strong science and quantitative background. A coherent environmental ethic. Knowledge of economic forces. Knowledge of state and federal policies that affect aquatic resources (especially CWA). Ability to communicate with people that may disagree with you or have a very different background. Common sense.
Petty’s Ethic Human Societies depend on services provided by aquatic ecosystems (water, flood control, food, recreation, aesthetics). Our use of aquatic resources must protect the internal capability of aquatic ecosystems for on-going re-creation (i.e., sustainability). Self-sustaining fisheries require naturally functioning ecosystem processes. Fisheries managers should be actively managing to restore and protect natural ecosystem process such that self-sustaining aquatic ecosystems are maintained for the benefit of human society.
