“Young Goodman Brown” by Nathaniel Hawthorne

Warm up questions… 1. Based on the reading on page 456 in the literature text, Hawthorne is known to leave some “ambiguity” to his story. What parts of the story are purposefully ambiguous, and what might be the reason for that? 2. Write down one question that you have about this story (either something you are confused about or something that is worth discussing). 3. What is one possible theme for this story? Find a quote from the story that supports this theme.

The Essential Questions… 1. Is it possible to hold onto one’s innocence entering adulthood? 2. How do our perceptions of the world influence who we are? 3. How can observing our surroundings help us to understand our place in the world?

Don’t you hate it when…? Free write about something in your life or society today that you think is phony. What are the reasons for the phoniness, do you think? How does it make you feel? Do you participate in it or not? What is the solution?
