The Human Body: Respiratory System
 The function of the respiratory system is gas exchange. It makes sure the body has a steady supply of oxygen while it disposes of carbon dioxide.
Respiratory System The respiratory system is the body system that provides body cells with oxygen and removes carbon dioxide that cells produce as waste.

The Respiratory System
The respiratory system exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide.
- changes depending on amount of carbon dioxide in your blood - more carbon dioxide, breathing rate increases.

Respiratory System In Class Notes:

Function: (30.5) Provide oxygen for cells and remove waste product carbon dioxide from the body

Organs Involved: (30.5) Nose/mouth-take in air Pharynx- air passes through Epiglottis- keeps food and water from entering air passageway Larynx- voice box Trachea-windpipe Bronchi- connects trachea to lungs Lungs- main organ of respiration Bronchioles- bring air to alveoli Alveoli- where oxygen passes into blood and carbon dioxide taken out Diaphragm- controls breathing rate

Sequence of breathing: In inhaling air pressure inside lungs drops and air enters, the diaphragm contracts and lungs are pulled down to expand. In exhaling air is forced out of the lungs, the diaphragm relaxes and lung returns to normal shape and contract.

Diagram:

Parts you should know:

How is breathing regulated? The rate of breathing is controlled by the medulla in the brain When level of carbon dioxide in the blood is too high the medulla increases the breathing rate and vise-versa.

What effects does smoking have on the respiratory system? Smoking exposes system to many harmful substances Destroy cilia Risk for lung cancer Emphysema (walls of alveoli lose flexibility) Cardiovascular diseases (stroke and heart attack) Addiction

Name at least 3 disorders & provide a description: Asthma Inflammation and narrowing of lungs Shortness of breath and difficulty breathing Heart Murmurs Whole in heart Diastolic/Systolic Sickle Cell Anemia Genetic Breaks down blood cells Short of breath, fatigue, pain, blood clots, death
