Let’s do this together …. Scene two – 8 mark question The theme of prejudice is explored in this extract. Show how the theme of prejudice is developed here and elsewhere in the play.

C – COMMONALITY (2 marks) What you need to do: Write a blurb about prejudice and how it is “developed throughout the play”. i.e. use your notes from the coloured theme sheet. E.g. Throughout the play, the characters either express prejudice or are affected by prejudice from others outside of their culture. The characters define themselves proudly in relation to their national heritage and the country they live in – sometimes to the exclusion of others. This ideas is developed throughout the play.

H – HOME Passage (2 MARKS) What you need to do: Find a significant example of prejudice from the extract given to you. Quote and explain “She must be giving you something you can’t get from an Italian girl” Suggests that Rosinella is prejudiced as she believes that Scottish girls have poor morals / are sexually promiscuous compared to Italian girls who she considers to be more chaste/virtuous

This develops the theme of prejudice because it shows how the Scots community has turned against Massimo and his family because they are now fearful of all Italians since the outbreak of the war – despite them having known and liked the Predreschis for many years.
