The “Cost” of Urbanizing URBAN GAME The “Cost” of Urbanizing

Create Your Village: The year is 1700 and the nation is England.  The scene is a rural village. Draw: A river across your paper connecting east to west. The river should be about 1 inch wide. Draw a simple wooden bridge crossing the river. Draw 2 roads one running north to south and crossing the river at the bridge and one running from east to west, more parallel to the river. Neither road needs to be a straight line. Draw 10 houses, 1 church, 1 cemetery, 1 store, 1 pub, 1 coalmine, & at least 50 trees. You have 3 minutes to complete. Do not waste time perfecting your drawings or coloring.

Round 1: Draw: 1 canal. It must run parallel to and connect to the river at some point. 1 nice, big home anywhere on the map you would like it to be.  This is from obtaining a profit from the canal.

Round 2: Draw: 5 more regular sized houses

Round 3: Draw: A fenced off area, about 3x3 inches to be reserved as a common area 5 more regular sized houses 1 more nice, big house

Round 4: Draw: 1 factory (no smoke—it is powered by water!). Remember, the cotton factory must be placed on the river bank.  Canal water is not swift enough to generate the power to the working parts of the water frame.    5 more regular sized homes for workers

Round 5: Draw: 15 regular sized houses 1 church 1 pub 1 store Additional roads and 1 additional bridge to start connecting your village

Round 6: Draw: 5 new factories. They must be on the river bank for power! 5 more regular sized houses

Round 7: Draw: 5 tenements

Round 8: Draw: 1 store 1 pub 1 church 1 school for those families wealthy enough to send their children (boys) to school

Round 9: Draw: 5 more pubs Destroy 5 houses 4 tenements.

Round 10: Draw: 2 more nice, big houses 1 more factory on the river bank 15 more tenements You may remove trees if needed

Round 11: Draw: 10 factories with smoke! They don’t have to be along the river bank now Smoke to all other pre-existing factories.  1 more nice, big house since people continue to get rich.   5 more smaller houses 1 more tenement

Round 12: Draw: 1 new coal mine 1 new iron bridge to replace the old wooden one 5 more smaller houses

Round 12: Draw: 1 new coal mine 1 new iron bridge to replace the old wooden one 5 more smaller houses

Round 13: Draw: 1 cemetery

Round 14: Draw: 1 major railroad line connecting all your factories to your coal mines. 5 more smaller houses

Round 15: Draw: 1 jail 2 more pubs 2 more tenements.

Round 16: Draw: 20 street lamps.  These are streetlamps and must be located along streets

Round 17: Draw: 2 hospitals 1 more cemetery.

Round 18: Draw: 1 more railroad line passing east to west through your town.    5 smaller houses 1 more tenement

Round 19: Draw: 1 theater 1 museum 2 private schools for upper class students (mark these schools with the letter “P”)    1 nice, big house

Round 20: Draw: 1 more cemetery 1 more jail 1 more hospital to accommodate the victims of urban life

Round 21: Draw: 20 more smaller houses 5 more tenements 2 more stores 1 more church 5 more steam-powered factories 1 more pub 3 more nice, big houses
