Why? I chose to write a letter to the editor of my local newspaper to dispel some beliefs about the care of psychiatric patients at Western State Hospital. I also used this opportunity to explain to the public exactly what a psychiatric nurse does.

Patient care Our patients have access to mental health professionals 24 hours a day. They each have their own room with an attached private bathroom. Each unit has multiple TVs and most have a gaming system. Many patients have access to common grounds which includes a full indoor basketball court and gym. Visitors are welcome daily during visiting hours with no time limit. Patients also have the ability to work towards their GED.

Patient care cont. Many patients are well enough to go on day passes into the community. Group field trips are also available to patients who have the level. Patients gain their level by following their treatment plans and demonstrating good behavior.

Caring for Mental illness Patients who have mental illnesses can be extremely dangerous. It is important to maintain working relationships for the protection of staff and patients. Nurses must have the ability to read behaviors and notice triggers. I also rely a lot on my gut instinct. Critical thinking is of great importance for the safety of everyone.  Mental health nurses juggle physical health as well as mental health. It requires a special skill set to succeed.

boundaries The main reason patient and staff get abused is by crossing boundaries. Unfortunately, patients that have borderline personality disorder will pretend to be your friend until the answer is, “No.” The main thing to remember is the patients are not your friends. Staff has more power and have to be careful to not use their power to their advantage. The relationship is to benefit the patient, not staff. The best policy is to treat each patient like a porcupine, don’t get too close or you may get hurt.
