Zero-Tolerance vs Restorative Justice Socratic Circle Zero-Tolerance vs Restorative Justice

Things to Consider What evidence suggests restorative justice programs are needed? What kinds of offenses should and should NOT be heard by a justice committee? Why is this system called restorative justice. What is supposedly being restored? What are the negatives of this program for students either on the committee or involved in the process? What are the negatives for teachers and administrators? What kinds of people could serve on the committee? Can you think of people that might be good in this role? Is this program realistic at Bemis? Why? Why not?

Common Criticisms of School Restorative Justice It takes too long.  2. It is too emotionally draining.  3. Teachers should be teaching content, not conducting restorative justice meetings. 4. Kids end up getting away with bad decisions. 5. Agreements made in restorative processes are not always followed.  6. It places an unfair expectation on victims to talk to those who harmed them. 7. It places an unfair expectation on victims to forgive those who harmed them. 8. There are too many steps and parts to apply consistently.
