Multiple choice Tips: These questions are designed to trick you. If you are unsure of the answer use your rhetorical skills to determine the correct answer. Remember that these questions are designed to trick you. Whether or not you remember the details is one thing, but remember you have a thorough understanding of history and therefore you should trust your instinct and try your best not to overthink. If you find yourself struggling, go with your gut and move on.

Short Answer Questions Use the text to help contextualize and recall the information you will need to complete your response. Read the question very carefully. Restate the question if you simply cannot get started in writing an answer.

DBQ Thesis- be clear and direct and state your reasoning that you will develop in your essay. Keep your thesis as narrow and focused as possible. Argument development- make sure each paragraph connects, supports, rationalizes… etc your Thesis Statement. Constantly check to make sure you are connecting it back to the thesis. Use of the Documents- Utilize at least 6 documents to support the thesis. So once you write down your quote, tie the explanation of the quote back to your thesis every single time. Sourcing the Documents- Be sure to explain the significance of the author’s point of view, purpose, audience, and historical context for at least 4 documents Contextualization- situate the argument by explaining the broader historical events. Developments, or process immediately relevant to the question. Outside Evidence- Specific evidence that is not from the documents Synthesis- Extend the argument by explaining the connection between a development in a different historical period, situation, era, or geographical area.

Keep in mind… You do not need a high score on the multiple choice section to pass the exam. Averaging a score between 25-35 is healthy and your standing to pass remains solid. You all write wonderful essays. Just be sure that you fully explain your answer. Explain your historical thinking and analysis- there is not such thing as overkill in this situation. It will not kill you ta add a sentence for rationale but it will kill you if you miss the mark on the exam and do not pass for missing rationale. Be confident in yourself and the results will be promising.
