Chemistry Do Now 2-6-19 Directions: Take out a sheet of notebook (Do Now sheet) and set it up as instructed. Answer the following questions. (5 minutes) Give 1 piece of evidence that supports the Big Bang Theory. What happened to the black dots you drew on your balloon yesterday as you continued to blow up the balloon? What does ROYGBIV stand for? Put the colors of the visible light (ROYGBIV) in order from the least energy to the most energy.
Chemistry Do Now 2-6-19 Key Give 1 piece of evidence that supports the Big Bang Theory. There are more than 1 answer to this question. Sample answer: The universe is still expanding. What happened to the black dots you drew on your balloon yesterday as you continued to blow up the balloon? They moved away from each other. What does ROYGBIV stand for? Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet Put the colors of the visible light (ROYGBIV) in order from the least energy to the most energy. Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet
Objectives Students will know the visible light spectrum, how it is used to determine distances in space and how to determine whether an object is moving towards or away from Earth by taking notes, reading an article and creating a color wheel. Mastery Level: 75% or better
Homework Complete the article quiz on light spectrum Go to: https://www.ducksters.com/science/quiz/light_spectrum_questions.php and answer all of the quiz questions on a sheet of paper or e-mail it to me at drichards@bcps.k12.md.us.

Explore Students will read an article on light spectrum and will answer the TDQs/quiz questions. Students will e-mail me (drichards@bcps.k12.md.us)the answers to the quiz questions.
Prepare to take notes on the formation of the universe
The Electromagnetic Spectrum
The Electromagnetic Spectrum longest wavelength shortest wavelength The Electromagnetic Spectrum The name given to a group of energy waves that are mostly invisible and can travel through empty space Shorter waves have more energy and longer waves have less energy
Characteristics of Visible light: longest wavelength shortest wavelength Characteristics of Visible light: Shorter wavelength than infrared waves. Can be seen as colors. Half of Sun’s rays are visible light.
REDSHIFT & BLUESHIFT
What Are Redshift and Blueshift. By Elizabeth Howell, Space What Are Redshift and Blueshift? By Elizabeth Howell, Space.com Contributor | March 16, 2018 The visible light spectrum. Redshift and blueshift describe how light shifts toward shorter or longer wavelengths as objects in space (such as stars or galaxies) move closer or farther away from us. The concept is key to charting the universe's expansion. Visible light is a spectrum of colors, which is clear to anyone who has looked at a rainbow. When an object moves away from us, the light is shifted to the red end of the spectrum, as its wavelengths get longer. If an object moves closer, the light moves to the blue end of the spectrum, as its wavelengths get shorter. Source: https://www.space.com/25732-redshift-blueshift.html
How do we see color? The absorption of all colors creates BLACK. The reflection of all colors creates WHITE.
Extension - Exit Ticket Color wheel activity to demonstrate the reflection of all color.
