From Local Catalog to World Wide Web Online Northwest February 10, 2006 Janet Chisman Greg Matthews Lihong Zhu Welcome

Overview Google Scholar Linking Open WorldCat OCLC eSerials Holdings Pilot Janet will talk about the programs. Greg will review things to think about, but we would like to have questions during the presentation also. Before we start how many already use Google Scholar Linking; Open WorldCat and know about OCLC eSerials Holdings Pilot

Google Scholar Linking http://scholar.google.com Overview Requirements Link resolver Registration More information http://scholar.google.com/scholar/libraries.html Example Google Scholar provides text links next to articles in journals to which the library subscribes or has listed in the knowledgebase associated with their link resolvers. This brings direct access to this material from one of the most popular search engines on the Web. It also provides opportunities for patrons to link into the catalog and other library services presented on link resolver service menus. This capability requires a library to use a link resolver and to register the link with Google Scholar. Links display for patrons when on campus and also off campus if they have gone through library authentication before using Google Scholar. Any ideas on how to get people to authenticate so this ability is available off campus? Online example – search each in Google Scholar JSTOR American historical review 1895-1999 – subscribed JSTOR American speech 1925-1999 - unsubscribed JSTOR Acta musicologica 1930-1998 – no subscription

Google Scholar Linking

Google Scholar Linking

Google Scholar Linking Issues Title links First citation - Page not found Second citation - Subscribed full text Third citation - Unsubscribed full text Find It (resolver) link Appears to be part of title link Links to subscribed full text most of the time Passed info not enough so don’t get full text link Need to find out if can get the button instead of or in addition to the text link

Open WorldCat http://www.oclc.org/worldcat/open/ Overview Requirements OCLC Membership Contributor of holdings to WorldCat Subscription to WorldCat on FirstSearch Example Open WorldCat provides the ability for information seekers to perform a search in Google or Yahoo! and to search for a local library holding the material. There is a link directly into the library catalog to check availability and perform other authorized functions. In order to participate in Open WorldCat a library must be a member of OCLC, contribute holdings to WorldCat and subscribe to WorldCat on FirstSearch. Currently there are over 17,000 libraries participating in this program.

Open WorldCat Tools http://www.oclc.org/worldcat/open/searchtools/ Yahoo! toolbar Google Toolbar Autolink feature Firefox search extensions The newest version of Google Toolbar enables always-there access to Open WorldCat records through its AutoLink feature. AutoLink detects the presence of ISBNs on any viewed Web page. When ISBNs are found, the AutoLink button on the Toolbar is retitled Show Book Info. Clicking the button highlights ISBNs on the page and converts them to hyperlinks to Open WorldCat information for each represented item. In order for ISBNs to link to Open WorldCat, "WorldCat" must be selected as the default provider (above right) in the Toolbar's Autolink Settings. AutoLink Settings can be selected either from the Google logo menu (Options > Browsing tab > AutoLink Settings button) or the "Change Default Provider" link on the AutoLink button menu.

Public Services Moves the library to the Web More options for assisting patrons More to learn about How to get the word out Authentication issues So, now that we have all this information out on the Web what are the consequences. Reference – we can get library-shy people how to use the Web to get directly into the library without going near a catalog It also means there are more new services to learn about and consider how to use effectively.. Collections Library Instruction – we now know at least two more things about the Web than our patrons!! Being able to show them more new ways to find information increases their respect for librarians and provides opportunities for increasing information literacy

E-resource Maintenance Increased need for accurate linking to e-serials Vendor-based solutions TDNet, Serials Solutions, EBSCO Link resolvers i.e. SFX Electronic Resource Management tools In-house solutions

OCLC eSerials Holdings Pilot Overview WSU participation Anticipated outcomes OCLC eSerials Holdings Pilot is a project between OCLC and several vendors supplying e-journal data to subscribing libraries. Vendors include TDNet, Serials Solutions and EBSCO. WSU joined to give OCLC an opportunity to also use data from SFX – to which we subscribe. And of course to give us a chance to get our eholdings loaded with minimum effort. WSU sends the file generated by SFX for Google Scholar to OCLC once a month. The holdings are loaded into WorldCat using a matching algorithm developed for the pilot project. Currently 95% of the ISSN-based holdings are being automatically added to records for the electronic titles. OCLC is developing a method to web crawl our Google Scholar file which would eliminate the need to send the file. We expect that this participation (and we expect the pilot to develop into an OCLC service) will increase exposure to our e-journals on the Web in the Open WorldCat program. This will increase use of subscribed materials and drive down our cost per use. We will also be able to contribute to ILL by making holdings available so other libraries can request articles and we can provide when licenses allow.

Cataloging Review policies and procedures Workflow Single record vs. Multiple record policy Explore new ways to present holdings FRBR Give up some control FRBR – connecting different manifestations of the same work – possible solution to Open WorldCat linking problem? OCLC eholdings pilot automates selection of record for attaching holdings

Interlibrary Loan Lending Increases requests for articles in e-journals owned Increases requests for articles in e-journals owned that cannot be used for ILL Borrowing Helps ILL staff catch requests for items owned Increases access to articles in e-journals not owned
