Notebooks Students need to have a notebook for each subject. All class notes are taken in notebooks. Notebooks are collected and given a grade. Incomplete or missing notebooks will effect the overall grade in each subject.

Homework Homework is given Monday through Thursday nights to reinforce curriculum taught in school. Students should have an hours worth of homework per day. Homework is due first thing every school day. If homework is not completed, the student will call home. They will spend the morning recess on the wall, allowing them time to finish incomplete assignments. If incomplete work becomes a habit, additional actions may become necessary.

Homework Pass Each student is given one homework pass. No consequences for not having homework complete. The assignment is due, completed, the next day. If turned in later than this it is considered late, and it will not be possible to get full credit on the assignment. Additional homework passes may be purchased by students for 40 tickets.

Late Work Unless a student is absent, work must be turned in on time. Late work will not be given full credit. In the third trimester late work will not be accepted for any reason other than school absence.

Multiplication Facts Each student know their multiplication facts through 12 without hesitation. Students are required to pass 100 math facts in 3 minutes, with 100% accuracy. Success on math facts goes directly on the student’s report card. First trimester requirements: N- on the 5’s or anything lower S- on 6’s through 12’s E- on All (Multiplication facts 0-12 or division) As a reminder, an N on a report card will prevent a student from being on honor roll.

Writing Students will be writing every day! Your child will be responsible for writing a 5 paragraph essay approximately every two weeks. Essays may be typed, but parents need to write a note saying the student typed it.

Reports Students will research and write several reports this year. Students will receive an information sheet with the criteria for the report. I will post report criteria on my website. Research reports will be given with plenty of time to complete them, usually two weeks. Reports may require additional time at night or on the weekends.

Silent Reading and Book Reports Students are expected to have a silent reading book at all times. Book report books must be: a chapter book, 100 pages or more at their Accelerated Reading (AR) level. Book reports will be assigned approximately every two weeks. Format will be handed out with enough time for completion.

Current Events Each student has been assigned to a Current Events group. Every Friday, one group of students will present their current event to the class. This is an individual presentation. Students are to read a current article from a magazine or newspaper, summarize it, and present it to the class. Articles should be: Current, major events, Not sports highlights, Not weather reports Grades are assigned based on content of the presentation, as well as on the presentation itself.

Instrumental Music Instrumental music is in the morning. Students will miss math and language arts. Students are responsible for making up the work they miss on their own.

Agenda It is your child’s responsibility to write in his/her agenda every day!

Honor roll Honor roll is based on grades. 3.0-3.49 Honor Roll 3.5-4.0 Principle’s Honor Roll No N’s on report card- including behavior Each grade is assigned a point value. A-4 points B-3 points C-2 points D- 1 point All points are averaged

President’s award National award with specific guidelines. For a child to be eligible for the President’s Award: a score of 570 or higher on their 4th grade CST’s in either Language Arts or Math Principle’s Honor Roll (3.5+) for all three trimesters of 5th grade. No exceptions!

Graduation We do not have a 5th grade graduation. We have an end of the year celebration.

Movies We watch academically appropriate movies in class from time to time (National Treasure, Shiloh). I try to keep all movies G rated. From time to time, I do show PG rated movies.

Cell Phones Many students have cell phones. They may bring the phone to school as long as it is not seen or heard. Student are not to use cell phones during school hours. No calls No texting If this policy is violated, I will take the phone. It will be returned at the end of the school day.

Birthdays and Parties If you want to celebrate your child’s birthday at school, please let me know a couple days ahead of time. This assures that there will be time set aside to celebrate with your child. All treats should be store bought. If you are interested in planning or assisting with class parties, please let me know.

Toys All toys, including balls, electronic devices, and trading cards are not allowed at school. If I see a toy I will give the student the opportunity to put the toy in their backpack. If the toy is a continued distraction, I will take it. The child may get the toy back at the end of the day. If toys continue to be a problem, I will take them and a parent may pick them up from me.
