How did railroads affect time? Too difficult to set schedules when every community determined its own time Established standard time A system that divided the United States into four time zones

How did the railroads affect the economy? Linked economies of the west and east Raw materials went from the West to the East Manufactured goods went from the East to the West

How did the railroads change the population of the West? Helped settlers, such as farmers, ranchers, and miners move west. Weakened the hold of the Native Americans on the West.

In what way did the railroads give people the control of the environment? Made it possible for people to build cities in places with no waterways, such as rivers, to use for transportation.
