October 5-6, 2015 Glue “October Pumpkins” into your Bell Ringer section You have 5 minutes to find the ten errors in the paragraph and answer the multiple choice questions **We will check our Elie Wiesel bell ringers #1+2 next**

Elie Wiesel Bellringer #2 Lourdes Wisby & Leo Ruiz

What is the most effective revision in sentence 5?

Incorrect Answers Answer F is incorrect because there is no conjunction that would make those two sentences one. Answer H is incorrect because “Elie studied the Talmud and the Kabbalah” has nothing to do with the rest of the sentence. Answer J is incorrect because it didn’t have a comma before the conjunction.

The Correct Answer Answer G is correct because the conjunction is placed properly & it makes a compound sentence.

Strategies We highlighted the sentence. We rewrote the sentence the way we thought it would be and then we chose the closest one to our sentence.

Elie Wiesel Bell Ringer Timothy Villa, Luis Medrano, Suzilu Juarez

Question 3: What is the most effective revision to make in sentence 10? Sentence 3 states: It was during this time that Wiesel met François Mauriac, a noble laureate and he encouraged Wiesel to write of his experiences in Nazi concentration camps. It was during this time that Wiesel met François Mauriac, a Nobel laureate who encouraged Wiesel to write of his experience in Nazi concentration camps. It was during this time that Wiesel met François Mauriac, a Nobel laureate; who encouraged Wiesel to write of his experiences in Nazi concentration camps Nobel laureate François Mauriac encouraged Wiesel to write of his experiences in Nazi concentration camps; it was during this time that Wiesel met him. A Nobel laureate during this time, Francois Mauriac encouraged Wiesel to write of his experiences in Nazi concentration camps.

INCORRECT ANSWER B: WHY IS IT WRONG? The reason answer B is wrong is because it states: It was during this time that Wiesel met François Mauriac, a Nobel laureate; who encouraged Wiesel to write of his experiences in Nazi concentration camps The sentence does not flow properly AND the semi- colon is not being used properly.

INCORRECT ANSWER C: WHY IS IT WRONG? The reason why answer C is wrong is because it states Nobel laureate François Mauriac encouraged Wiesel to write of his experiences in Nazi concentration camps; it was during this time that Wiesel met him. This is incorrect because Nobel laureate is a tittle of someone for example the correct syntax of this would be : Suzi, a Nobel laureate, is a beautiful woman. Also, The semi-colon is not being used properly

INCORRECT ANSWER D: WHY IT IS WRONG? Answer D states: A Nobel laureate during this time, Francois Mauriac encouraged Wiesel to write of his experiences in Nazi concentration camps. The reason why answer D is wrong is because of the improper use of the title of a person. The sentence also does flow properly.

CORRECT ANSWER A: WHY IS IT CORRECT? Answer A states: It was during this time that Wiesel met François Mauriac, a Nobel laureate who encouraged Wiesel to write of his experience in Nazi concentration camps. This answer is correct because the grammar of the sentence is correct. Francois Mauriac, a Nobel laureate, who encouraged. . . Is used properly. The sentence also flows properly.
