Word Knowledge Scales: Dale Stage 1: Never having seen the term before Stage 2: Knowing there is such a word, but not knowing what it means Stage 3: Having context-bound and vague knowledge of the word's meaning Stage 4: Knowing the word well and remembering it Dale 1965

Word Knowledge Scales: Dale Stage 1: I’ve never seen the term before Stage 2: I’ve seen it but I don’t know what it means Stage 3: I can use it but not sure I can explain it Stage 4: I can use it and explain it Dale 1965

2: I’ve seen it but I don’t know what it means 1: Never seen it 2: I’ve seen it but I don’t know what it means 3: I can use it but can’t explain it 4: I can use it and explain it Word 4 3 2 1 Before: Enter the vocab words for the lesson. Ask students to rate themselves 1-4 on each word. “Eyeball” the class, enter the average score. Note the 4s, ask one or two to orally use and explain the word. If they are accurate, they may help other students with that word.
