What is a Persuasive Device? A persuasive device is a technique used by companies and governments to influence us in many ways. There are specific things that companies use to try to persuade consumers to buy a product. Do you fall for any of the following persuasive device techniques?

Hop on the Bandwagon “Everybody’s doing it.” Appeals to the listener to be and think like everyone else.

Someone Give Me a Testimonial “It worked for me.” Appeals to the listener that this could be the answer to a problem.

Aw, Shucks! I’m Just a Plain Folk! “I am someone you can trust and have your best interests at heart because I am just like you.”

Aw, Shucks! I’m Just a Plain Folk! Appeals to the listener that this person is just like him/her and would not lie or deceive someone.

Stop All of That Name Calling! “You want to believe me because the other repulsive person is lying to you.”

Stop All of That Name Calling! Appeals to the listener that they should believe the speaker because something is wrong with the other person.

How About Some Emotional Appeal? “What can I tell you that will leave you outraged?” or “Don’t you want to help?” or “This will make you feel happy.”

5. How About Some Emotional Appeal? Appeals to the listener by attempting to bring out their strong feelings. This approach uses loaded terms (we’ll talk more about this later on in the presentation).

Who You Callin’ a Snob Appeal? “You can look rich, be popular, be gorgeous/handsome, too.

Who You Callin’ a Snob Appeal? Appeals to the listener that he/she will be seen as belonging to a higher social class and everything in life will be better.

Let’s Practice #1 (AP) Choosing one of the types of persuasive devices, write a sentence for it. So, you are sort of writing an advertisement, but not quite Be prepared to share!

Loaded Terms This occurs when words with strong positive or negative connotations or associations are used. These words can be charged with emotion. “No really intelligent voter would vote for that candidate.”

Print Material Print Media is any type of advertisement that is printed on paper (magazines, newspaper, flyers, brochures, posters, etc…).

Don’t Forget About the Radio! Remember that we hear advertisements on the radio too!
