Predicates of Sentences Grammar Skill First Grade Unit 1 Week 3 Created by Kristi Waltke Edited by Cheryl Phillips

Do you remember the three things we learned about a sentence? A sentence is a group of words that tell a whole idea. A sentence starts with a capital letter. A sentence ends with punctuation (like a period or question mark).

We also learned about the subject of a sentence. The subject of a sentence tells us… Who? What?

Now we are going to learn about predicates of a sentence. The predicate of a sentence is made of the words that tell what a person or thing does. Let’s look at predicate of some sentences.

“Naps on Mom’s lap” is the predicate of the sentence. Sam naps on Mom’s lap. What does Sam do? “Naps on Mom’s lap” is the predicate of the sentence.

“Sit in mud” is the predicate of the sentence. The pigs sit in mud. What do the pigs do? “Sit in mud” is the predicate of the sentence.

Ox packs the sack. What does Ox do? Packs the sack is the predicate.

Let’s make some sentences Let’s make some sentences. The things that Ox does will be the predicate of the sentence. Big Blue Ox ____________ . will use the pans naps mops the pigs digs gets the cans

Have you got it? Let’s practice figuring out if the words in the circle tell the naming part or the action part.

Max hops to the top. Subject Predicate

Jack can dig. Subject Predicate

Mom and Pop eat. Subject Predicate

The duck swims in the pond. Subject Predicate

Now take the practice test to see if you’ve got it. We talked about how a sentence needs to tell a whole idea. If a sentence has a subject and a predicate, it tells a whole idea! Now take the practice test to see if you’ve got it.

Practice Test Directions: Choose the predicate of each sentence. My dog barked at the cat. Tam and Matt played ball. The cat ran away. He likes to play with a ball. Jack can catch the ball. He is really good at catching. The girl will help him learn how to get the ball. My mom can see us play. She gives us both snacks. I love to play too! Check your answers on the next slide.

Learning about predicates will help you learn to be a great writer!
