"Russian Cities in America" ГБОУ Школа № 2073 "Russian Cities in America" Выполнила: Россихина Элина Ученица 5 А класса Учитель: Яковлева С.Ф. 2018 – 2019 уч. год

Studying the names of American cities is particular interest due to the fact that a very intensive mixture of races, traditions, cultures, languages of various nations, who came here from different parts of Europe, and also inhabited territories from time immemorial, occurred in this territory.

The purpose of this study is the origin of the Russian names of American cities. The urgency of the work lies in the fact that the study of the origin of Russian city names help us to deepen our knowledge of the United States of America.

tasks: • studying toponymy of the Russian names of American cities; • studying the history of the city formation. The object of study: the American cities with Russian names. The subject of the study: The origin of the city names.

Hypothesis: suppose that the origin of city names was influenced by: - historical events that occurred on the territory; - geographical features of a city; - people who have made the city famous;

Moscow, Kansas

St. Petersburg, Florida

Sevastopol, California

Tolstoy, South Dakota

Volga , South Dakota

Researching part We interviewed 50 pupils of our school. The children were asked to answer three questions:

1. Decipher the USA? On the first question, 93% of the students answered, and were able to decipher the USA.

2. Which cities in the US do you know? The second question, 9% answered that they do not know, and 91% of students know some cities in the US.

Students could name only 4 cities of the USA: New York (63%) Washington (31%) Los Angeles (5%) Chicago (1%)

3. Do you know that in America there are cities with Russian names? 95% of students answered "no" 5% of students answered "yes"

Conclusion I learned that: 1) in the United States there are cities with Russian names; 2) most often among the Russian names on the American map are Moscow; 3) most of the cities were called Russians who arrived in America and missed their homeland; 4) the study showed that these data are relevant, since they can be used in English lessons.
