Text to Illustration (E2I) March 01, 2019 Text to Illustration (E2I) Hello Everyone! I am Anupam and I work on Storage Product documentation for HPE Knowledge Management Team. Today, I will take you through the various visual value adds that we have done for various products. Each slide contains the customer problem, KM solution, and feedback received (if any). Anupam Das

Visual Communication Visual communication is the process of presentation of information through a visual aid. Visual communication is described as the method of imparting ideas and information in forms that can be read or looked upon. Visual communication partially or completely relies on vision and is primarily expressed as signs, typography, drawing, graphic design, and illustration. Visual communication takes place through pictures, graphs and charts, signals and symbols. It may be used either independently or as an adjunct to the other methods of communication. .

Visual Aids - Types Objects Models Graphs Maps Tables Photographs Illustration - Standard Illustration to depict a concept - Application of Cartesian coordinate system - Interactive Illustrations - Application of Decision Tree Simulation - Youtube Software Simulation video to simplify a complex procedure The list describes the basic entities that are used to generate a visual aid. One or more objects together can convey a definite meaning to accomplish a task or understand a concept. In a similar manner, models of real life objects can help us to understand the actual object and study it in details. Similarly, Graphs, tables and maps constitute the major part of data representation visually. Enabling the end users to understand and absorb information in a better manner. We now turn our focus on emphasis on the Illustrations and Simulation that we will look in the upcoming slides.

Need for Visuals in Technical Communication End user problem Too much running text Complex and long procedures Too many references to documents Difficulty in finding relevant information Result Bulky documents Increase in support call Increase in documentation maintenance Increased localization cost Unhappy customers Chances of losing business and customers Impact of the change Customer Delight Complex scenarios made easy Increased information findability

Scenario 1 – Running Text Problem Solution

Scenario 2 – Complex and long procedures Problem This simulation was developed for a use case from customers who purchase RMC to protect their databases. Through this simulation, we depict how to create an express protect and snapshots for Oracle database. We have used Adobe Captivate to create the video and is posted on Youtube HPE channel. More than 1000 views in the first few weeks of posting the simulation on YouTube channel. Solution Short video detailing the procedure, posted to YouTube and referred through HPESC

Scenario 2 – Complex user roles scenario Problem T Solution A basic infographic using Venn diagram concepts

Scenario 3 – Too many references to documents Customer Problem Various documents for appliance setup, network configuration, and infrastructure setup Lot of inter-operating components attributing to the difficulty in working with the appliance Setting up Image Streamer involves working with OneView, Interconnects, and different components of the Synergy Enclosure. For a first time user, it is difficult to follow the vast list of documents for Image Streamer. The interactive illustration provides the minimum steps required to setup an Image Streamer appliance and configure it to work with OneView and then perform a deployment. You can click a step to get the details and link to the related documents. The appliance where the step is performed gets highlighted. Solution

HPE Synergy – Documentation Map Customer Problem Linear and exhaustive list of (Data Center Management Software) documents Activity-wise listing of documents did not help users understand the sequence of tasks Manual search required for each of the documents either on HPE documentation portal Solution For HPE Synergy, we have a linear list of documents, we have added interactivity to it. Feedback I never said thank you for creating these – I like them very much! – Radomir Bozic (Member of Senior Leadership team)

HPE Recovery Manager Central – Decision Tree Customer Problem Customer unable to decide on license purchase Complex licensing permutations between hardware and licenses Complex licensing scenarios resulted in increased support calls Solution For HPE Synergy, we have a linear list of documents, we have added interactivity to it. Feedback Fancy. Thanks – Tilman Walker (Manager Storage Solutions and Tech.Mktg.)
