Patent Policy and Procedures: The contributor is familiar with the IEEE 802 Patent Policy and Procedures <http:// ieee802.org/guides/bylaws/sb-bylaws.pdf>, including the statement "IEEE standards may include the known use of patent(s), including patent applications, provided the IEEE receives assurance from the patent holder or applicant with respect to patents essential for compliance with both mandatory and optional portions of the standard." Early disclosure to the Working Group of patent information that might be relevant to the standard is essential to reduce the possibility for delays in the development process and increase the likelihood that the draft publication will be approved for publication. Please notify the Chair <stuart.kerry@philips.com> as early as possible, in written or electronic form, if patented technology (or technology under patent application) might be incorporated into a draft standard being developed within the IEEE 802.11 Working Group. If you have questions, contact the IEEE Patent Committee Administrator at <patcom@ieee.org>. Dr. Michael D. Foegelle, ETS-Lindgren Dr. Michael D. Foegelle, ETS-Lindgren
Doc.: IEEE 802.11-06/0132r0 January 2006 January 2006 Abstract This presentation summarizes the draft submission 802.11-06/0131r0 on Traceable OTA Performance Testing. The draft submission introduces the test environment and metrics necessary for traceable over-the-air performance testing of the wireless radios in 802.11 devices. bet Dr. Michael D. Introduction to Proposal January 2006 Introduction to Proposal The contents of this submission have been presented and reviewed over the past year and a half and include information from contributions: IEEE 802.11-04/0674r1, “Passive Antenna Measurements vs. Over-The-Air Active Measurements and Associated Metrics for Wi-Fi Testing” IEEE 802.11-05/0943r0, “Conducted Power and Sensitivity Measurements” IEEE 802.11-05/0944r0, “OTA TRP and TIS Testing” Dr. Michael D. Traceable OTA Test Environment Introduction and Purpose January 2006 Traceable OTA Test Environment Introduction and Purpose Describes the test system required for performing traceable over-the-air RF performance tests on 802.11 DUTs. Specifies system components and associated measurement quality. Addresses combined radio and antenna related performance of single DUTs in free-space in free-space with near-field loading with other impairments Introduces bulk performance metrics total radiated power (TRP) and total isotropic sensitivity (TIS) and related metrics. Traceable nature of measurements allows comparison of DUTs tested in different systems to within a known level of measurement uncertainty. Dr. Michael D. Foegelle, ETS-Lindgren
Traceable OTA Test Environment Configuration January 2006 Traceable OTA Test Environment Configuration Defines test system consisting of: Fully anechoic chamber for isolation and free-space environment Multi-axis positioning system for spherical pattern measurement. Dual polarized measurement antenna. Traceable RF test equipment for measuring power and sensitivity of DUT (based on conducted test methods). Near field phantoms for different physical use cases. Dr. Michael D. Foegelle, ETS-Lindgren
Traceable OTA Test Environment Configuration January 2006 Traceable OTA Test Environment Configuration Defines environmental parameters/characteristics including: Spherical coordinate system and polarization definitions. Specifies far field conditions and range length issues. Defines the quiet zone and references various site validation methodologies. Provides methodology for range calibration. Note: This section is part of training documentation I’ve written in the past. Portions of this section were submitted to the CTIA and published verbatim as part of their OTA test plan, but rights to distribute original content were maintained. Can pursue official release from CTIA if needed. Various other uncertainty contributions and points of concern. Dr. Michael D. Foegelle, ETS-Lindgren
Traceable OTA Test Environment Approach January 2006 Traceable OTA Test Environment Approach Defines basic physical configuration for free-space measurements of DUT. Orientation with respect to positioner/coordinate system. Orientation of moveable antenna elements. Routing of cables, etc. References conducted tests for other DUT parameters. Defines variants of test configuration including: Use of near field phantoms (head, hands, tabletops, walls) Alternate antenna orientations. Alternate cable orientations. Impairment with other radios active (converged devices) Defines variants of test conditions including angular step size and sensitivity search algorithm. Dr. Michael D. Foegelle, ETS-Lindgren
Traceable OTA Test Method Specification of Metrics January 2006 Traceable OTA Test Method Specification of Metrics Defines single point metrics: Effective Isotropic Radiated Power (EIRP) Effective Isotropic Sensitivity (EIS) Defines integrated (total) surface metrics: Total Radiated Power (TRP) Total Isotropic Sensitivity (TIS) Defines ratio metrics: Directivity Front to back ratio Gain Efficiency Dr. Michael D. Foegelle, ETS-Lindgren
Traceable OTA Test Method Procedure & Results January 2006 Traceable OTA Test Method Procedure & Results Defines step by step procedure for measuring pattern data using conical cut method (north to south pole). Specifies recommended output information. Dr. Michael D. Foegelle, ETS-Lindgren
