10/31 Topic: Time to Research Aim: How do I research? Do Now: Take your folder

Research Process – Steps 3 & 4 Reading & Hi-Lighting Problem Action Impact

Research Process- Step #5 How do I make a fact card (white index card, p. 15 in handout)? Take the information you hi-lighted and write it on a white index card Put the information into your own words . . . . PARAPHRASE

Research Process- Step #5 1 note per card . . make sure you include dates Source number & page number appear on card You MUST paraphrase it, which means putting the information into your own words. You CAN NOT just copy it from the source to the fact card (white index card).

Citable Information As you research make sure you find citable information and mark the cards What do I cite? Information you are not going to paraphrase or unique information Statistics, quotes, speeches, specific details from an event, interview, etc . . . Two to three per body paragraph – 5 to 10

Citable Information Information that is going to be cited in your paper does NOT have to be paraphrased but you should write "cite" on the card and write down the author's last name and page #.

Citable Information By 1964 a movement arose and the union United Farm Workers Association (UFWA) was formed with 1,000 members. Following the example of Gandhi, Cesar announced in February 1968, he was fasting to rededicate the movement to nonviolence. He went without food for 25 days, only drinking water In 25 days, Cesar lost 35 pounds. His doctors said his life was in danger.

Citable Information At the end of the boycott, 25 large growers entered into negotiations and signed contracts.10,000 workers were now given formal union representation, a higher wage ($1.80 plus 20 cents for each box picked, as compared to the pre-strike wage of $1.10 an hour), a health insurance plan, and safety limits on the use of pesticides in the fields. After a five year long struggle, the workers had won not just better wages and working conditions, but a renewed sense of dignity.

Citable Information "The consumer boycott is the only open door in the dark corridor of nothingness down which farm workers have had to walk for many years. It is a gate of hope through which they expect to find the sunlight of a better life for themselves and their families." (Cesar Chavez).

Citable Information Chavez says, "The consumer boycott is the only open door in the dark corridor of nothingness down which farm workers have had to walk for many years. It is a gate of hope through which they expect to find the sunlight of a better life for themselves and their families" (Chavez, 2).

Research Process Take a source & Colored Index Card Make source card Read Article Re Read & Hi Light (Problem, Action, Impact) Make Fact Card (Paraphrase or CITE) When you are done with the source put it in your folder and take another one.

Research Where are the articles located & supplies? Only take one article at a time . . Source #1, Source #2 . . . Go in order Remember the steps in the research process . . . You must follow them.
