Emperor The ruler of the Chinese empire. Ruled from a mandate of heaven. Chosen by god to rule Failure to protect the people from disasters could result in the overthrow of the Emperor – Lost the mandate of heaven

Scholars Known as the Shi Were the educated members of the society. Officials, Calligraphers, Philosophers etc…

Peasants (farmers) Known as the Nong Were mainly farmers. Poor Highly regarded because of their hard work to contribute to society

Craftsmen Known as the Gong Well regarded in their skills and labour in making what people need Cloth, weapons, jewellery etc…

Merchants Known as the Shang Wealthy Looked down on in society because they did not contribute to society They got their money from the work of other people

Slaves Consisted of: Prisoners of war Criminals People sold to cover debts (often children)
