News from Room 211 Our Month What’s Coming Up Notices Mrs. Leary Month Ending February 28, 2019 Our Month What’s Coming Up Although there were only fifteen school days this month, lots of learning took place in Room 211 during the month of February. We complete unit 4 in math. We learned about expanded notation and rounding numbers to the hundreds and tens place. We learned different strategies for multi-digit addition and subtraction. Right before vacation, the assessment was given. In Social Studies we completed and shared our colonial research posters. Weather was our focus in science. We conducted evaporation and condensation experiments. We also learned about the water cycle. In writing, we worked on expository and opinion writing. The expository pieces tied into our social studies colonial life unit. In reading, we started the Character Studies unit. Using picture books and the class read aloud, Because of Winn-Dixie, we examined the main character’s traits. We also worked on story mountains. At the end of month, we started Book Clubs. In these groups, we will practice the skills learned earlier in the month. We also started the fable unit. We also had several special activities this month. Report cards went home early in the month. We celebrated the 100th day of school. We also had a celebration on Valentine’s Day. We worked with a few other classes to hold a school-wide drive to solicit socks for the homeless. Over 1000 pairs of socks were collected! Thank you to all of the families who were able to help out. Math – Right after vacation, we started unit 6, a geometry unit. Science – We’ll continue our study of weather. In library, we’ll be researching wild weather topics. This information will be used to practice Google slides. Social Studies – After learning about the French and Indian War, we’ll read about the other events that led up to the conflict on April 19, 1775. ELA – We’ll complete the fables unit. We’ll continue to work on the character studies unit. Notices Read Across America Day is Friday, March 1st. Students are invited to come to school dressed as their favorite storybook characters. Students should bring a book to school daily. It will be used at the end of the day to read quietly during dismissal. Mrs. Leary Sorting and counting socks with our kindergarten buddies.
