Communicating with children and young people Citywide Forum Communicating with children and young people September 2018

Citywide Forum (Children, Young People and Families) Maxine Hawthorn – Aberlour Assistant Director   Michelle King – Rosemount Service manager Members of the Citywide Forum Steering Group Members on the Child Protection Committee (Representing Third Sector) Introduce myself and Michelle from the Citywide Forum Steering group and CPC members representing third sector. There are other members her today (if you can stand up to identify yourself). We are delighted to be here today – there has been significant developments and lines of communication between the third sector and CPC and Glasgow HSCP. Karen Frew has been in post a short time but has made a great link between the third sector and the CPC.

Citywide Forum (Children, Young People and Families) Over 800 third sector organisations providing services to children, young people and families. Very diverse range of organisations providing an equally diverse range of services Need for Citywide Forum agreed June 2016 Steering group established Sept 2016 Launched Feb 2017 The City wide forum has been in place since 2016 and as you can see represents over 800 organisations from very small to larger organisations.

Citywide Forum (Children, Young People and Families) The Children, Young People and Families Citywide Forum aims to: Co-ordinate reps from the Third Sector on strategic committees on Children’s Services Ensure two-way communication and feedback Share knowledge, experience and good practice Gather and co-ordinate views Ensure that the voices of services users are heard Aims of the forum are: as per slide. One of the areas that is more challenging in the field of CP is ensuring that the voices of young people are held. SW’s and Police are highly trained in conducting CP investigations and how they interview young people. However it is something that comes up at the CPC regularly is how do we truly involve children and young people in ensuring their voices are heard and feedback improves the way the system works and they get the right support they need. It has been recognised over the years that Third sector colleagues often have more success and tools which enhance children and young peoples ability to be heard. So today we have a few innovative examples of third sector engagement with C&YP. Let me introduce them: next slide It is hoped that these examples might help us all engage better with young people and assist the CPC in developing future methods and tools to involve young people. We are currently not as lucky as the Adult protection committee to have service user representatives on our committee –so how do we develop more effective ways.

Citywide Forum (Children, Young People and Families) Programme today Communicating with Children and Young people   Introduce – Third sector organisation staff Joanie Robins – Children 1st Historitive Practice Manager (Kitbag) Martin Canavan – Aberlour Policy and Participation Officer (Aberlour Youth Conference) Josie Farrow - Let’s talk worker and Danielle Kelly, Kinship Project Worker (Mind of my Own app)  Stuart Lindsay – Aberlour Quality Improvement Officer (Graphic facilitator) Graphic facilitation is a tool we use within Aberlour to do consultation events with professional, Families and children and young people. GF records an event/ideas in a pictorial way. Today Stuart from Aberlour will graphically facilitate the Third sector input and hopefully you can all see the example at the next break.
