Volume 125, Issue 4, Pages 1094-1104 (October 2003) Low microvessel density is an unfavorable histoprognostic factor in pancreatic endocrine tumors  Anne-Marie Marion-Audibert, Cécile Barel, Géraldine Gouysse, Jérôme Dumortier, Frank Pilleul, Céline Pourreyron, Valérie Hervieu, Gilles Poncet, Catherine Lombard-Bohas, Jean-Alain Chayvialle, Christian Partensky, Jean-Yves Scoazec  Gastroenterology  Volume 125, Issue 4, Pages 1094-1104 (October 2003) DOI: 10.1016/S0016-5085(03)01198-3

Figure 1 Immunohistochemical results. Two examples of CD34 immunostaining of endocrine pancreatic tumors are shown in A and B; in A, intratumoral microvascular density is high: CD34+ structures are numerous and small; in B, intratumoral microvascular density is low: CD34+ structures are rare and large. In normal Langerhans’ islets (arrow), capillary vessels are characterized by a faint and heterogeneous expression of CD34 (C) and of the smooth muscle isoform of α actin (D). In contrast, the smooth muscle isoform of α actin is strongly detectable along intratumoral capillary vessels and in the wall of arterioles (arrow) (E). (Immunoperoxidase followed by nuclear staining with Mayer’s hematoxylin; original magnifications: A, 200×; B, 200×; C, 350×; D, 350×; E, 200×).
