About Science

What is Science? Science is: the body of knowledge that describes the order within nature and the causes of that order dedicated to gathering knowledge about the world and organizing and condensing it into testable laws and theories an ongoing human activity

How do scientists develop Laws and Theories? They ask questions They take measurements

Scientific Measurements Measurements are a hallmark of good science. “I often say that when you can measure something and express it in numbers, you know something about it. When you cannot measure it, when you cannot express it in numbers, your knowledge is of a meager and unsatisfactory kind. It may be the beginning of knowledge, but you have scarcely in your thoughts advanced to the stage of science, whatever it may be.” —Lord Kelvin

Scientific Measurements How much you know about something is often related to how well you can measure it Is scientific measurement something new? No. Even in ancient times scientists were able to estimate the sizes of the Earth, Moon and Sun, as well as the distances between them.

Some Early Scientific Measurements Eratosthenes—Calculated the circumference of Earth by setting up a stick in Alexandria to measure the angle of the shadow it cast, knowing the distance from Syene to Alexandria

Some Early Scientific Measurements Aristarchus—Calculated the Distance to and Size of the Moon using data collected during solar and lunar eclipses

Mathematics —The Language of Science When the ideas of science are expressed in mathematical terms, they are unambiguous (not open to interpretation) and they are testable The mathematical structure of physics will be evident in the many equations you will see this year as we study physics The equations are guides to thinking that show the connections between concepts in nature

Scientific Methods There is no one scientific method. In general, scientific methods refer to principles and procedures for the systematic pursuit of knowledge involving the recognition and formulation of a problem, the collection of data through observation and experiment, and the formulation and testing of hypotheses. The scientific method is most effective in gaining, organizing and applying new knowledge

Scientific Method —Common Steps Recognize a question, a puzzle, or an unexplained fact. Make a hypothesis (educated guess) to resolve the puzzle. Predict consequences of the hypothesis. Perform experiments or make calculations to test the predictions. Formulate the simplest general rule that organizes the three main steps.

The Scientific Attitude The scientific attitude is one of inquiry. experimentation. willingness to admit error.

The Scientific Attitude Scientists are experts at changing their minds. must accept experimental findings test for erroneous beliefs understand objections and positions of antagonists.

The Scientific Attitude Fact is a close agreement by competent observers who make a series of observations about the same phenomenon; facts may change A scientific hypothesis is an educated guess that is only presumed to be factual until supported by experiment; a valid hypothesis must have a test for proving it wrong

The Scientific Attitude Law or Principle A hypothesis that has been tested repeatedly and has not been contradicted A scientific law can often be reduced to a mathematical statement, such as E = mc² Describes scientific phenomena (observations) Theory A synthesis (combination of ideas) of a large body of information that encompasses well-tested and verified hypotheses about certain aspects of the natural world (phenomena) Explains scientific phenomena (inferences) The scientific community does not value one over the other because both are important and distinct forms of scientific knowledge

A truly educated person is knowledgeable about science, art and religion; all three involve passion, talent and intelligence
